Which Business Name

Scuba Cougar Detailing sounds kinda catchy.

I kind of agree...

It's because Scuba, (underwater diving), and Cougar, (a mountain lion), are just so opposite from one another and have nothing to do with detailing that it kind of makes me stop and wonder about the meaning and connection. That might be enough to get interest and then all you need to do is get your customer to take action.

What's the thought on .com vs .biz? If there was a great name, and the .com was used elsewhere far, far away to avoid confusion, what's the group think about a .biz?

From what I've read the "experts" in marketing always recommend going with a .com domain name but sometimes you have to get what you can get if you like the actual name.

For a local business, if a person's interested in finding you and scheduling work or getting more information then they'll remember .biz .net or .info etc.

My son's name was taken as a .com, kind of surprising since his first name is not all that common, so I purchased and registered a .net name for him.

RandPhillips.net

On a unrelated topic, I always recommend parents to try to register their kids names, or variations of their names just in case down the road they need it as a part of their career, like bing a Lawyer, a Doctor, a Rock Star, A Race Car driver,

You just never know...

It's different but the 'Scuba' makes me think marine / boats at first.

I would suggest to go for the .com if you can. Just the first thing people think. But as far as ranking in Google it probably doesn't matter. Especially since you're going to target locally. And getting a top ranking for a local business is easier than for a global one. You'll be targeting keywords for your area.

People in your area will search for 'portland auto detailing' for example. This keyword gets an average of 33 searches per day, which is about 1000 per month. If you have the #1 position in Google you can expect to have almost half of the people click to your website. All potential customers. :D (Note: That could be Portland ME, OR, or any other Portland for that matter. Needs to be researched some more of course)

Sorry to ramble off topic, but as a new biz if you plan to get customers via a website you need to plan your biz/domain name as well.

For what it's worth, I have never hired someone based on their website, word of mouth accounts for 90% of the service spending I do.

If you prefer certain areas, consider hitting up Home Owners Asscociations to give them a discount in their monthly flier. That way you can get potential work in a small area with less travel and then you can do 2-3 jobs a weekend instead of spending half of it driving all over to shady neighborhoods.

I'm not sure about using the term "cougar" to detail a lot of "mom taxis" would be a good thing :). But then again, it could be!

You and Maximus have an interesting idea. Probably want to call it Cougar Auto Detailing just so none of the soccer moms got the wrong idea. :D

Thanks, guys.

Some "moms' might think you only detail Cougars...as in old Mercurys.

I read with interest all the thought going into detail business names. Mike Phillips is so right. When you incorporate your personal name into your business name the customer feels it is so much more personal. Lets look at some of the biggest businesses around. JC Penny, Walmart, Sams Club. For 38 years the first two names in my business name has always been my given name

well it goes both ways. some people like to have the feeling 1 person(the owner) is getting personal with their ride, and not some guy named Carlos who is hired help off the books.
and some people like the feeling that they are being touched by a big, established detailing business with expensive equipment. not some 1 man operation with "joe the detailer" on the biz card then a phone #, then ''Ask for Joe" next to it. Really? should i ask for Joe???
