I'm looking at purchishing one of the Porter Cable polishing kits. This will be my first time usung a duel action polisher. Looking at all of the various kits that are offered I'm not sure which one to choose from. I have a black truck and I want to remove the swirls and any oxidation from the paint. What pads do I need and what type of swirl remover, wax, polish, etc.
Thanks

i recommend 5.5" pads, easier on the pc. also menzerna polishes worked well on my truck. be sure to use clay before polishing

Also I currently have Meguiars Polish, Swirl Remover and NXT Tech Wax. What is applied first polish or swirl remover ?

What polishes do you have. You apply the polish with more cut and work your way down.

I got the pc7424 light swirl kit. I too have a black truck that I thought had decent paint. I used the pinnacle #2 first but had to go to a more aggressive polish. I think I should have got the intermediate kit. I also got the LC 5.5" pad set as you will need to have a few extra if you want to polish all day.

Pick a Menzerna Kit or a Megs kit ... for me its that simple and comes down to personal preference. You will find many happy people from both camps.

Like previously mentioned, just get a meguiar's or a menzerna kit. Those two are the best polishes IMO as well as several other people.

Here is a picture of meguiar's for most to lease aggressive

Notice that Color X is not on that list. I do not know exactly how abrasive Color X is, but I don't believe it is that abrasive.

I know more about meguiar's than I do menzerna. So I will comment on Meguiar's and other might chime in about menzerna.

If you are going to get Meguiar's I would be M105 and M205. As you can see M105 is far more aggressive than M205.

So if you use M105 you will have to follow it with M205 as M105 causes hazing due to how abrasive the compound is.

Like I said earlier, always use the most abrasive compound first and then follow it with the least aggressive.

The best kit I saw that included M105 and M205 is this one.

It comes with some 5.5 inch CCS pads which personally I am not too fond of. Some people like the CCS pads and some people like the flat pads. You might be able to ask for flat pads in the comment section when you order if you prefer those over the CCS pads.

Any pad you choose, I would prefer the 5.5 inch size as I feel it gives more cut since it is a smaller pad. That's the beauty of M105 and M205 you can dial in the aggressiveness of the cut by the size and type (color) of pad you use.

If you have any other questions let me know.

That kit looks good. Would you recomend claying before hand ? And once i have applied the M205 I should follow up with a coat of wax. What is the best pad for applying the wax.

Yes clay before! You should always clay before using a polish/compound. Make sure your paint is smooth if you decide to just wax as well.

You can follow up with a glaze and then a wax/sealant. You can do both, or all three. It is up to you.

Here is a chart that autogeek has:

As for what pad, If you are going to use the flat pads I would suggest black or even blue. Black is a little bit more aggressive, but just by a hair.

I would suggest you take a look at Mike Phillips' articles as they are full of information :props:

Need anything else let me know :)

I started out with the PC7424XP kit that came with m105 and m205 with orange and gray pads. After polishing out three or four cars I got menzerna 85. Most of the time my process is correction with orange/105/speed six, first polish with white/205/speed six, final polish gray/85/speed five. Now this is all going to get thrown outta whack when my Griot's comes this week from the awesome amounts of extra power. The best thing for you to do is to find a process that works for you and stick with it.

ColorX uses diminshing abrasives. The the picture of products you posted, all of those use non-diminshing abrasives. :xyxthumbs:

^oh yea good point. I never thought of that. I know color x was introduced a while ago. I'm surprised they still have it on the shelf.
