I was planning on using 205 to remove some swirl marks and microscratches on a black car. I was going to use an orange pad, is that too agressive?

Black paint seems to show everything. You probably will want a less aggressive pad to polish the black car after using the orange pad to remove the microscratches. I normally use a polishing pad like a white or green pad with polishes like 205.

Black paint will also benefit from a finish polish and a finish polishing pad.

It's hard to say, best thing to do is try it out. Maybe start with white and 205 and if that doesn't provide the results you want then move to 205 and orange.

One thing i have come to learn about paint polishing is there are no absolutes... Everything needs to be tried out and tested.

Play around with it and report your findings.

I'm a big fan of M205 and a meguiars polishing pad as a combo for light correction. Be sure to use the KB method. If you're not familiar with that apprach, just search KB method or watch Scottwax (my idol)

Post pics so we can see !!

No pics, but I did a pass over the whole vehicle (2011 4runner) with the 205 and an orange pad, and followed with a meguiers liquid wax application using a black pad.

Car came out looking pretty good. There are still some swirls left in the paint, but nowhere near as many as what I started out with. Damn dealer. Im pretty certain most of them were put there by them.

I was a little hesitant about using a power tool on my new ride, but after using the PC, I think the only way you can do any damage is if you purposefully try and damage it (i.e. taking 60 grit sandpaper and putting in on the backing plate!).

...or if you drop it, trust me on that!
As for the original post question:

I usually start M205 on a white polishing pad, in fact I did this '09 Highlander that way after both of my orange pads both failed.
