i am trying to decide which polish i should order. i want a polish to give my car a deep shine. i was looking at the pinnacle but I'm not sure and needed advice. i have a porter cable 7424xp by the way. thanks

I have been using Optimum hyper polish and Optimum Polish II and they both work great.

Sent from my DROID RAZR using AG Online

Because he only has 2 posts and is talking about which polish to give a "great shine" we should really see if he means like an abrasive polish/compound or like a wax/sealant. Lots of people talk about "polish" when they mean "wax".

Much of the finished results come from properly preparing the paint prior to applying a sealant or wax.

Compounds and polishes are products that make the finish sparkling readying it for a sealant or wax.

As a baseline you could begin with an over the counter compound and polish. Depending on the current condition of the paint I've recommended two that work very well.

Meguiar's is one of the biggest names in detailing products and have been around for over a century. Life for them began in 1901 so this should give you some idea of their quality. The two products below are part of Meguiar's commercial line and are available through most local consumer outlets and automotive parts stores.

Basic steps in order are:

  • Wash
  • Clay
  • Paint Correction & Polish
  • Seal
  • Wax
Dual Action Polisher

1. - Working with a dual action polisher

2. - On my Porter Cable 7424, I use the backing plate, and pads below

Some additional products you might like.

Sealants

Wax

Wheres MIke with his detailed responses?! Although, BobbyG did post a great response as usual :props:

Like Bobby G said.
Good prep work (correction, if needed, and polishing) are about 85% of the work IMO. If those steps aren't performed well, then no matter what you put on top wont really matter. Assuming all is done correctly, I would go with either 3m ultrafina, menzerna po85rd. Again the polishing step is what brings out the clarity and depth. What you top of with will give you protection, and wetness. Hope this helped rather than confuse!

i mean polish and not wax. my car has good paint except for the trunk where there is a lot of small scratches. thank you for the polish recommendations. can you recommend any compound to apply to the scratches and would this be better if applied by machine.thanks

While any compound "can" be applied by hand it's highly recommended that they're machine applied. This method ensures consistency and uniformity..See my post above for recommendations..
