I have two sealants that I recently bought and I am wondering which one offers the best protection. I am not talking about my daily driver, I am talking about a black car that sits in a garage for 5 days out of the week (with a cover on it) and that I only use on the weekends (in San Diego).

1) Opti-seal

OR

2) Poorboy's EX sealant w/ carnauba

Also, it is only a 3 months old old but I want to use a clay bar sometime soon. What would be the best clay bar & lubricant for a new 2011 car (still have to do the baggy test). There are a few swirls and 1 scratch that I found but nothing too bad. Also, it looks like there is some "overspray" but I am not sure I am using that word correctly. Like a little extra paint that sticks up off the car; feels like the tip of a pencil.

Any thoughts or alternate approaches/products would be helpful, thanks.

Sealant - I like Duragloss #105 mixed with Duragloss #601
Clay/Lube - I like Riccardo clay and Optimum No Rinse mixed at clay lube ratio

If you have minor impurities you could get away with Mothers Clay Kit. The quick detailer that the kit comes with is very, very slick. As for sealant, the great thing about Opti-Seal is that you can apply it, cover the car, then when you're ready to drive it again just do a quick sealant application and in no time it's ready to go!

Can't speak to Opti-seal, but 3 months later my PB EX is still beading strong. DD that sits outside days, garaged at night.

If you're waxing every 60-90 days either will work well and it might come down to personal preference and appearance (deeper/wetter look).

for clay lube i just use Optimum No Rinse mixed as wash solution. After I wash a car I can clay right away. If its in the sun I will use a pressure sprayer to add more lube. I'm not gonna get another bottle and mix up clay solution, wash is fine for me.

Why do you use a car cover when your car is garaged five days a week? Aren't you worried that the car cover will scratch/mar the paint?

edit, for OTC clay get meguires. I'm using mothers right now and its awful. The thing doesn't kneed and 100 grams is only good for 3, maybe 5 cars. meguries kneeds so easily and can be used for 10 cars or so.

Any clay bar off the shelf will do what you want. Of the two you have I'd use the Poorboy's for a warmer look along with great protection.

I would go with Pinnacle Utra Fine clay as you probably won't need anything aggressive. ONR for a clay lube. My vote goes to Menzerna Power Lock Sealant..so easy on and off. And since it's a garage queen and black, I would top Power Lock with Pinnacle Souveran. Just can't beat Pinnacle Souveran on black paint. Will look like you poured oil over the car.

I have been really happy with Wolfgang 3.0 paint sealent. It goes on really easy using my pc and comes off great. Leaves a slick smooth surface and great shine.

Really? I find Mothers to be more malleable than Meg's. Interesting.

I'm just getting into sealants myself, so I can't speak personally. However, if you google both you'll find that both products are very respected and should do an excellent job. Opti-Seal gets many recommends as a long lasting, easy to apply pure sealant. The PB is more of a polymer-enriched wax. Lot's of folks top a pure sealant with a wax or wax/polymer to improve looks and longevity. It is recommended to clay the car before you polish and seal. There are articles discussing how to remove over-spray with clay. Again, you can google. Many use diluted No Rinse car wash as a lube and the various mfg's do provide dilution ratios for this. It's one reason I bought the a No Rinse - several uses from one product - wash, water softener, clay lube, quick detailer - depending on dilution. Hope this helps.

Really? I was sorta thinking that but I was also thinking that it would save me a lot of washes and thus fewer swirls due to washes. Also I feel like I have a pretty dusty garage, on top of that I'm not living where the car is being stored and I figured covering it would protect it from my bro and family members digging around in the garage etc. Are car covers sometimes known to cause scratches/marring?

Which is the lessor of two evils ?

I personally like Menzerna Power-Lock Paint Sealant. I've been using this for a while now and like the way it goes on with a dual action polisher and how easily it buff's off.

Here's a few other options that I know work well.

  • Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant
  • Klasse High Gloss Sealant Glaze
  • DP Poli-Coat Paint Sealant *
*Detailer’s Pride has just introduced a new upgraded line of detailing products called their Pro-Series. I have not tried the new product yet but its predecessor worked very well for me.

Also I am a noobie and it isn't overspray cause I Google imaged overspray and its definitely not that and I should of known better that word is pretty self explanatory lol. It is on one of the panels and it is like a mini mound of paint because when I rub my finger on it its sharp and pointy.

Thanks for the replies so far. I think I like the idea of the Pinnacle Utra Fine clay since I definitely don't need anything even close to aggressive probably cause the car is only a few months old. And maybe lay down Poorboy's EX over the Opti-seal.

Are all of those non-abrasive and ok for clearcoats?

Pinnacle ultra poly clay and pinnacle clay lube(good stuff).

I wouldn't layer 2 different sealants(poorboys and opti seal) If you're going to layer, do a sealant then carnauba, or 2 coats of the same sealant. JMO.

Ok , let's say I already have Opti seal on there from two weeks ago and I wanted to try Poorboy's to see if I can see a difference in shine etc, would I want to stripe the Opti off before I use the Poorboy's EX ? I have pinnacle cleansing lotion in my supply.

You could always experiment and top the opti-seal with poorboy's, but I'm not a fan of putting different brand sealants on top of each other. Again JMO. Pinnacle cleansing lotion should remove the opti-seal if you want to strip the paint.

Of the 2 you mentioned that you have I like the Opti seal the best. I have both and like that the Opti seal is a straight forward apply and walk away nothing more to do.
If you happen to apply it a bit heavy in a place or two you can buff it a bit with a good MF towel to even it out but typically no need to buff after application.

As for OTC clay I have used Mothers and Maguires I think I like Maguires best. The detail spray with the Mothers is cinnamon scented if that interests you.Maguires makes a great product in their Ultimate Spray wax as well.
