White Trans Am makeover, newbie style

Nice results!

I took own a 2000 WS6 than recently underwent a drastic paint correction. My car needed D300/M101 on MF cutting discs to eliminate most of the RIDS. Your car looks great, but I would pick up a bottle of M105 if you really would like to take a run at those RIDS that drive you crazy.

Once you finish your correction, I'd suggest the DG501/601/111/AW wipedown method.

Thank you for the suggestion as well as the compliments.. Looks like that would indeed be the next step on this car, if I elect to take it further.

Boy, that DA vibration takes a lil gettin used to, doesn't it?!? My arms are a bit stiff today!

Sure is easier than trying to remove it all by hand.
It really looks great, especially the front fender shot:props:

Okay, so I finally got the opportunity to finish up, and its like its a whole new car!!

No sunshine here this afternoon, so the photos are kinda worthless... I only have one coat of 845 on it..

I am going to take it out to the local spring park and get some better photos this weekend.. May even be able to get a coat of Souveran on it by then.. (I have a sample)

Anyway, it's about 90% and that is satisfactory for me in any car of this age, especially considering the miles.. (Odometer reads 199,308)

Thanks again for all the encouragement, folks!! Now I'm super stoked to get to work on the other three... And some of my lot cars..

"I see swirls!!! They're everywhere!! AAAAARRRRGGHH!!!"

Oh, please do ignore the wheel barrels, they still look like crap.

Also, notes to self:
1. Buy rubber gloves and NEVER attempt to clean wheels without them
2. Beautiful curves = lots of hands-on attention
3. "1 of each" doesn't cut it. Buy in multiples
4. Follow the instructions, always!!

Plenty more "notes to self" that I forgot... lol

WalMart, Walgreens, CVS, pretty much anywhere now have nitrile gloves in stock.

More pads the better and easier.

Those pics look great!!

Never realized how curvey the front end is on those 'Birds.

Thanks Cartman and Bob.. I'll blame you two for this one.. Your as likely a culprit as anyone on here. ;)

Bob you don't know what you're in for, you'll be so tired of my pics soon you'll block me! lol

Rubber gloves? Mea culpa.. lol

I'll have you all note that there are still several problem spots on the car, places where the 6inch pads were just way too big to get in there (proof that my "hand work" could use some technique training as well as quality materials) and a couple places that seemed to simply deny the efforts of the one orange pad I have.

So this project leaves me with a few thoughts:

The GG6 has a LOT of rotation.. In a flat surface on top speed it actually takes a phenomenal amount of down pressure to stop the pad!

Would a 3 inch backing plate and 3.5 pad be even less likely to stop rotation?

And if so is there any negative effect to putting a 3 inch BP on the GG6 that I should be concerned with?

Seems to me like if I just got various backing plates for this beast it would save me a bunch versus buying the GG3 and a 5 inch backing plate for the 6.... Eh? (Bear in mind my intention is to become more than a hobbyist, eventually)

I'm figuring if/when I get into this commercially then I can consider owning a flex, a small and large rotary, pad washer, pounds of detailing clay and gallons of Klasse... Or at least that's how I figure it.

Anyway, I'm rambling.

Any size backing plate will work on the GG, speed, pad choice and product used will be the determining factor.
Your results are proof of determination for a better finish.

Beautiful work! I use 3.5" bp with 4" hydrotech pads for the tight spots. I love 'em! I'm not sure how much a smaller diameter affects pad rotation, but I do turn it down a couple tics usually. I also use a pcxp with 5.5" pads so I don't know how much my response helps?? I've enjoyed your pics and post, Great shine!

lol, yeah I'm kinda OCD and most definitely obsessive... The scratches and swirls underneath the rear spoiler, for instance? I'm sure I'll be doing those areas soon by removing the spoiler..

And by the top of the door

And the small edges of the spoiler

Etc, etc....

See, I'm a bit OCD.

Thanks! Yeah, I've already decided that I'll be downsizing to the 5 inch backing plate at least, the science makes sense.

Now to decide on a pad.. Seems like the hydro-techs are the ones that have the least reported issues.. And they come in the right sizes.

Thanks again for all the compliments, folks.. I can't wait til this spring, we'll find out what a Garnet Red Yukon looks like all polished out! Oh, and a Mean Green Wrangler!

Final photos, please forgive the nasty looking wheel barrels, I have nothing for them yet...

Looks great for the mileage! I love white f-bodies, which I'm biased, but hate that I can't get the reflection from mine like other colors. At least white hides swirls!

Thanks! Yeah, if this car had been any other color it would have looked like a train wreck!! As it is it still has plenty of deep scratches, but we're gonna live with those. As you mention, age/mileage and all..

But if anyone here wants proof that I'm a bit nuts, the order I just placed should do it for ya:

Speed master wheel brush combo (can't stand those dirty wheel barrels!)
3 inch and 5 inch backing plates
A slew of Cyan and Tangerine LC Hydrotech pads in those different sizes
Foam cleaning brush
A couple samples of WDGPS cause it sounds so awesome!!

Oh, and I'm headed to the garage to put a coat of Souveran over the 845 on the TA.

I prolly need to slow down a bit. lol
