Who cares about Wheels?

I hate cleaning wheels, when the weather permits I clean my wheels with brushes and soap every other week. On the off weeks a simple wipe down with a WW works as they are coated. I only drive a 100 miles a week on average (small community). Yes I cringe when I see a new vehicle with black front wheels.

I don't have a nice brush like that. i need to get some of those.
Still need to either remove wheels to clean calipers properly or keep rolling the car forward to expose the entire caliper.

What do you use as far as wheel cleaner?

Monica, your preaching to the choir!

Wheels HAVE TO BE CLEANED when you wash the car, period! I just don't know any other way and this is why my wheels look like they were just put on out of the box. It's not bragging but IMO wheels make or break a car and when you've got nice ones they should look their very best, heck, OEM's deserve your very best!

Did you guys stop to think that most people don't know how to clean wheels? Most people have never been to the area in an auto parts store that sells auto detailing supplies. If they have been down the aisle of Walmart to buy car wash, they probably looked at a whole aisle of products and didn't know where to begin to buy anymore than the car wash, so didn't. If they tried, chances are they purchased some OTC product like interior wipes or upholstery foam cleaner that made a mess of their car and never tried again. Most of you take for granted knowing so much, that you've forgotten what it's like to know so little.

My guess is those people that take the time to wash their cars have cleaned their wheels before (with car wash). But, managed such poor results, that they stopped trying.

If it bothers you the way their cars look, you might want to recommend a specific product they can purchase that will give them satisfactory results. If they give you a funny look, just point to your car's wheels and tell them it's not that hard. The way most of your cars look, nothing else needs to be said.

I saw a new Jeep Wrangler the other day (parked next to it while out) and it was fairly clean. But I looked at the wheels and instead of being silver they were matte brown. They were SO dirty and caked from brake dust they were literally a matte brown.

WHY don't people take care of their wheels? I know so many people who have "just washed their car". Yet their wheels are filthy and they obviously didn't touch them. Usually when I call them out and ask, "if you just cleaned your car why are your wheels still filthy?"
Their usual response... "oh I don't bother with the wheels".

I just don't get this mentality! To me if I don't take care of every part of the vehicle then it doesn't look clean or properly maintained to me!

Anyone else here experience this from others?

Well you must understand that cars are only valued as transportation to some people and not "an extension of their personality". They buy new cars because they are reliable not because they like the paint. I know someone who just spent 35000 on a truck and all he cared about was getting the best deal. He didn't care what make, model or color he got as long as it was only 35000 not a penny more.

Most people use automatic car washes and most auto washes have poor or non existent wheel cleaning ability.

But yeah, clean the rims and door jambs and to about 70% of people you’re the greatest detailer in the world.

I always check out a cars front wheels it paints a broad picture?

Exactly....the ones with dirty wheels likely just went through the drive through wash, that's the extent of their interest in detailing, some, actually most, just aren't into it. Imagine the engine bay and door jambs of that same vehicle? Probably not a drop of wax has ever touched that paint either. I have a 31ft RV that gets the same treatment as my vehicles, and most of my neighbours think I am nuts! My one neighbour just can't understand that to me it's enjoyable and a stress relief. You should see how I cringe when walking around a campground and I see all these RV's that don't get cleaned during the camping season and are plastered in bug guts! Different strokes for different folks I guess.

I remember back to my first car which was an old hand-me-down from my dad... I cared less about cars at that time in my life. Like so many out there, it was purely a mode of transportation...

BUT! I always kept my vehicles clean... inside and out. Whether I took it through a car wash or washed it myself I made sure it was clean from rooftop to tire treads. To me this was just common sense.

Maybe it is because I’ve always cared about keeping my things clean or well-kept? Don’t know, but not cleaning the whole vehicle makes no sense to me.

But I don't think it's because they don't care. They just don't care enough to find the proper way to do things. That and most people aren't as driven as someone like you. I don't think lazy is the right word - maybe overloaded in other aspects of their life they place a higher priority on - or for some, yeah lazy. But lazy generally don't wash their car.

You answered your own question! :)

For the vast majority, a car is a method of getting from A to B, and that's all it will ever be. We are the abnormal ones!

Remember, my evaluation isn't for the general public. it's for that part that washes their cars regularly.

Buy these brushes. They have the best reach. They can fit into pretty much any wheel where the others fail. They do a better job at cleaning too.

Not only do these brushes fit anywhere, but they don’t kick back any splatter. The only knock people have on these is there’s a little exposed wire on the tip, but you have to make a pretty huge mistake to let that somehow scratch your wheels. I’ve never had that happen.

Yes, Speed Master brushes can be messy but then again your washing your car, not out on the town, LOL. I will sometimes go side to side with the brush and when I go in and out I don't have a problem and my wife's wheels are 5 spokes too, just concentrate on what your doing.

One more thing about Speed Masters... just because they can be bent to get behind spokes doesn't mean you should, they will snap....DUH

My main tool for cleaning wheels is a microfiber and my hands.
I can get my fingers in small spots :xyxthumbs:

Why no specialty brushes Monica?

Well......

Honestly I find the brushes combersome.
And I wash and coat my wheels inside and out each time I take them off at the end of the season before storing them. I also make sure the calipers are spotless.

I don’t feel it’s totally necessary to have the inside of the wheels spotless every time I clean the car. Only way I really can do that is to take them off the car. I know they are protected.

Just me.
