Why Can’t People Follow Directions?

See these dirt specs on my wife's hood. They are absolutely beautiful and this is what happens when you follow directions. We just got her Acura out of the body shop where it had been for two weeks and the same dirt that was on the car when she dropped it off is still there and I couldn't be more pleased. A quick wash tomorrow and everything will be back to the way it should be with her SUV.

I feel this pain, and I think as car guys we've been in this situation at least once.

This is my list going back to when I got my license and the end of 2004, there's probably more but I don't really care to remember.

- Paint removed from the rear bumper of my first car, someone backed the car into an engine stand. The dealer had it repaired.

- On the same car, I had it in to fit a factory rear spoiler at a body shop. They lost the keys and had to have the whole ignition system replaced with two new keys and fobs. On what was supposed to be a few hundred dollar job, would have cost them $1000's to have that addressed.

- The XR6 was handed back to me with paint missing from the front bumper, noticed by me upon arriving home. The dealer again repaired it.

- I've had wheels ruined when new tyres were fitted. I was then told that I did that, so never had them repaired. Very upset over that.

- The Jaguar was in for a service, when I got it home, I noticed the hood and front quarters were covering in some sort of greasy substance, all streaky/smeary. I phoned and abused the service advisor, full Victor Meldrew style, about delivering a car back to the customer like that. He insisted I return the car, but I refused to let them touch it again, then wasted an hour getting it clean in the hot summer sun.

The thing is, people make mistakes, I get that. And in most cases, the dealer or business involved will take care of the problem. But that doesn't take into account for time and effort wasted on crap like this. Not to mention being so un-present at what you are doing to even notice the DO NOT WASH notes or cards left in the vehicle. I actually put a card and have it noted in the service requests/tasks so that the tech performing the service has it in writing in front of them.

This is the Victor Meldrew reference by the way.............................. "I'd like to speak to the manager and be quick about it"............. "does he know who's calling?".................."no he doesn't but he will shortly!"

Shadow Black Mustang GT……..oil change at dealer…… DO NOT WaSH written by me……new “state of the art tunnel wash….. Car not completely dry and left out in 90 degrees.

The were very sorry when I showed them. Cleaned one section off to show the etching for them. The offered to “buff out but couldn’t ceramic coat.

I told them that the oil change was free ($160) and I’d take care of it and they even threw in an extra one….. never went back…

When my Cadillac was in for major repair I called the receptionist to see how it was doing. She told me all done and that they were going to wash it. I almost came through the phone and exclaimed that it is a show car and it is not to be washed. I'm sure glad I was able to stop them especially because when I got to the shop I witnessed the wash guy hosing a Range Rover down with just a pressure wand,no soap. The pressure was so strong he blasted part of the rear window wiper clear across the floor. I thought this guy could've been doing similar to my car!

Next time I go to the shop I'm going to watch my car like a hawk and be sure everyone reads the do not wash sign.

The first time this happened they offered to take care of it and apply their own ceramic coating. I quickly told them I have my own detailing business and would handle it. They could just compensate me for the the products and my time. After doing some research this is their “ceramic coating” that they are charging $1000+ for.

Watching those guys is every 'Geek's nightmare.

This is the tunnel wash people are happy to send their car through at my dealership. Ain't no way in hell.

Many around here have the same thing and brag about "unlimited washes" if you buy ffrom them. You can bring it in whenever you want and they "wash it".

Interestingly enough, our Acura dealer just ripped out all their old wash bay equipment and installed a touchells wash. The GM is a total gearhead, so that probably helped.

This has been a really entertaining thread. Not only do people have a hard time following directions, sometimes I think they just flat out don't care.

You're going to love this...

The other day I got the hankering for something unusual, something I haven't had in a long time - chicken nuggets from McDonald's. I'm not looking to house a 20-piece, I just want a few. Smallest size is a 4-piece.

"Hi, welcome to McDonald's, can I help you?"
"Yes, I'd like the 4-piece nuggets"

*LONG PAUSE*

"4-Piece nuggets, any sauce with that?"
"Sure, I'll take sweet & sour."
"4-piece nuggets with sweet & sour. Anything else?"
"That'll be all, thanks a lot."

So I grab my bag and drive off. I know there are nuggets inside without checking, I can feel the box and hear them sliding around...so it's not like they're giving me a burger or anything.

I finally open the bag. What's in the bag?

THREE NUGGETS. And BUFFALO SAUCE!!

THREE (3!) nuggets?? Who has ever gotten 3 nuggets??

IT'S NOT HARD. It's like they're trying to mess it up.

My neighbor's son took his Volvo V60 Polestar wagon in for service. It's jet black. He recently had it coated, and left instructions for the dealership to not so much as come within 10 feet of it with water. Well, they ignored that and proceeded to install a lovely series of swirls all over the vehicle. Thankfully he was able to get them to have it corrected and coated again. Considering paint correction and coating installation is no cheap thing, maybe dealers will start to wake up and realize they will be paying small fortunes out of their pocket to fix such easily preventable mistakes.

Volvo has been a thorn in my side for 2yrs. I'm trying like hell to get that traded in for something new to play with but I get the "I love my car though".

And you know how much money those McD's employees make now?! Sorry, I won't go more political than that!

I still think it's 1% of customers, the dealer sees it as a cost of doing business, there will always be unhappy customers, so no "waking up" IMO

I've had fast food places ignore my instructions on how I like my burgers so much that I've pretty much quit going to them altogether

I think it's a combination of general incompetence and not caring.

No waking up, I agree. It'll fall under the "spoilage" category. I read "On The Line" by Chef Eric Ripert of Le Bernardin in NYC, and I was amazed to learn that the restaurant budgets thousands of dollars per month for fresh flowers and to replace chipped or broken plates and stemware. I'm sure these dealers will do the same.

My first job in high school was at a family-run hardware store for $5.25/hr. If you socialized in front of customers the owners would get pissed! Now I see kids dancing in the back of McDonald's playing music through portable Bluetooth speaker and not even saying a word to you as they hand you food or change.

*SHAKES HEAD IN MASSIVE DISAPPOINTMENT"

I was trusted with a Zamboni at $7-$8/hr.

And people wonder why they're being replaced by a kiosk.

many people these day have no respect for others or their property. it's the mindset of, "if it's not mind, then who cares". the youth now a days are getting dumber and more lazier and have no work ethic. it's scary what the future holds here in the USA. when i worked retail i had a boss that told me to walk them over to where a product was if someone asked for it rather than point where it would be. half the time if the customer can't find it, they will not ask again (upset) and just walk out and buy elsewhere...

Funny you should mention the customer walking out and buying elsewhere. I'm currently in communication with a store concerning a similar topic and I hope my speaking up about it leads to eventual improvement.
