I've been following this thread, along with many others, and it seems to have disappeared. When I did find it the error message said it had been moved and I didn't have the credentials to view the thread. It was linked in another thread this morning and it wouldn't open there either.
Anyone know why???
https://www.autogeekonline.net/foru...feel-like-i-duped-here-detailing-ceramic.html
As I stated in my post above. I did not move this thread and I don't know who did. No one contacted me about the thread before moving it, I like all of you found it moved when this thread popped up.
I've said it many times before and here I'll say it again, I'm not a Moderator on this forum I'm a how-to guy. I was never hired to be a Moderator and I don't like playing the part of Moderator. A Moderator is basically a Police Officer that enforces rules. It takes a special type of person to be a Police Officer and in my 16+ years of posting professionally to car detailing forums I would say it takes a special type of person to be a GREAT Moderator. Just giving someone the title and the forum permissions to move threads doesn't automatically make them "good" at being a Moderator.
So I don't know why the original thread was removed and I did not follow it or inject myself into mostly because I'm a tick busy. Lame excuse but with my job I have to prioritize and I can't get to every thread.
I just clicked on the link to the thread that WAS moved to the Moderator's Forum and I see it has now been moved back to the public side of the forum but it's been "closed".
Feel like I was duped here with detailing and ceramic coating
And again, I have know idea who here at work moved it, then closed it and then moved it again and at this point I don't really care.
So a shop can ask for a customers experience thread to be pulled because they were named for their subpar work and it'll actually get pulled? I really hope not, threads like that keep shops honest.
I think perhaps the customer asked for it to be deleted, maybe as part of a deal with the shop to get a refund.
From reading through both threads I don't see where the original OP stated he asked Autogeek to remove the thread? I do know that if there is a problem with a thread on this forum that cooler heads will prevail and if need be, a thread will be MOVED to the Moderator's Forum Group. For legal reasons we never delete threads on this forum, just move them out of public sight.
I think you underestimate the liability concerns that Calendyr mentioned. AG/PBMG really has no reason to expose themselves to a lawsuit, they are in the business of selling detailing products, they're not Yelp, they have no "duty" to keep shops honest.
From the shop's perspective, they went over and above, did the work twice, they are the authority, the customer was some uninformed loony who took some information from the internet and applied it incorrectly to the situation.
Good point and commentary Mike. And again, I have not heard or seen anything from anyone internal about this thread and why it was at one point moved out of public view but the original is now back on the public forum but it is closed.
To answer the OP of this thread, why did it get pulled may have to do with several of the following line items in forum rules getting bent...
Forum Rules
It is not a public forum:
Thank you Paul for sharing the forum rules, seems like that's a job I tend to get stuck with most of the time on this forum.
And without getting into legal definitions, while this forum is open to the public it is privately owned by Autogeek and the forum rules state exactly what Autogeek can and will do at its own discretion.
Not sure of the precise definition of a “public forum” but it is online and available for anyone to view. As for liability for the host, if someone relays their personal experience, that is factual and thus not a basis for a libel claim. Lastly, if the issue is small claims court, having had to sit through a few small claims dockets waiting for my client matters on calendar, one would be surprised how prone small claims judge pro tems are to side against a business when a customer claims they were treated unfairly.
Thanks for chiming in Rmd
I met with him Monday night after work and the vehicle looks awful in person and it is not even close to a $1700 job. There is a coating on it but the prep work is not acceptable by any standard as there are numerous defects still in the paint. He is going to drop it off Friday and I can have it for as long as I need it. I performed a test spot for him and he was well pleased saying it looked "1000% better".
Thank you for helping out a new forum member.
I cannot count how many times I've started a thread on this forum to find a forum member to detail someone else's car because the "someone else" was to lazy to join the forum and start their own thread, that's okay, that's how I roll.
I do appreciate that this forum is made up of lots of people both professionals and enthusiasts that can out detail so many in the detail world that call themselves pro detailers but as the OP's original thread demonstrated, just because a person puts out a sign that they are a detail shop doesn't mean they actually know what they are doing or do what they promise to do.
It is nice to see our forum members are able to clean up other people's mistakes.
Well, the real problem is that the entire thread was pulled, when all the liability concerns could have been addressed by either "bleeping out" (removing) all references to the actual company (either by deleting entire posts that do actually reference the company, or simply removing the company names and references from the posts and replacing them with "<redacted>" or whatever). I know this was far easier for the moderators, but this way a lot of useful information and posts have been lost. Throwing out the baby with the bathtub.
Valid point but at the same time, everyone here at Autogeek is busy with their own areas of responsibility. So at some point all the time it takes to babysit problem threads just hits the tipping point where it's easier to just close the thread or move the thread to the Moderator's Forum.
I was following it right up to the point of the pissing match which is why I think it was pulled,,in my humble opinion anyway.
My guess is someone here just moved it as the easy way out of dealing with it. Dealing with it means hitting the [Reply] button like I'm doing here and thinking and then typing. Like mentioned above, it's the holiday season and Autogeek is busier than a Hornets Nest. I don't think anyone including me can keep up with they day-to-day responsibilities. While everyone here loves the forum community, threads like the one we're talking about have a way of running their course and at some point it's better fro most involved to just shut her down and move on. Life is short, drama just eats up your energy that you could be using for something positive.
I was the starter of that thread and I can tell you there was no “other side to the story.” I took my vehicle to two different places and both places were flabbergasted at the work that was done on my vehicle, and how poorly the work was. There was tons of dust underneath the coating and absolutely zero paint correction was done.
Needless to say I did get a full refund. On top of that, one of the detailers I visited sent me a message asking me if I’d ever gotten my refund. He sent me a screenshot of a message someone sent him asking him if they might be able to fix his vehicle as the place that same place where mine was done had done a terrible job and there was tons of swirl marks and dust under the coating. The detailer wanted to know if i was able to get a refund as the message also said he wanted a refund but wasn’t sure how to approach it. I told him to threaten to go over there and also post pictures of his work. Once I did that I got a full refund and an apology.
Finally, I have my vehicle with a forum member here now (OCD-tailing). I’ve already seen some photos of his work on mine (I was blown away) and I will post them when the vehicle is ready as the previous shops work is being corrected and I’m getting done to the vehicle what I originally wanted.
It’s been quite a mess going through all that but I’m eternally grateful for all of the advice I got in here and it led me to the place I should have taken my vehicle to in the first place.
And the last sentence in your post above is the key sentence that makes this forum valuable for so many people over all these years, at least since 2006 when it was brought to life.
This is not the place to drag anyone through mud, and if you do, you will become "Self Banned." I will personally send a message to Meghan and Mike Phillips, both who have more to do with their time than screen the forum. They have a company to manage, great end of years specials and adverts to put together, classes to teach, tv shows to produce and countless customers of this forum to assist and help.
AGO is here to discuss techniques, products, gain knowledge, share knowledge, become a community, and help each other grow. It's not a dumping ground for bad experiences with detailers. We're here to help. If you lived closer to me, I would absolutely help you... Because that's what AGO members do... Your original post wasn't bad, it was a sanity check to see if what you received was on the radar to typical support. The first few replies pointed you on the right path to a clear answer, no this was not on the radar for typical service, and connected you with a local detailer on this forum. A name of the company should never have been submitted. That violated rule #4.
I'm not a moderator, nor the AGO Police, but I want a place I can come to, as a break from the all the bad news and stress of the day to immerse myself in an area I enjoy, and to those "regulars" and new members that keep this forum running. It's our hangout.
We've read the original thread to which got pulled, please DO NOT post the companies name to which you've received bad service.
Now I go back to my original questions, how can I help you? How can I help get you on the right path to take up detailing your own vehicles, and point you in the direction of product and technique? Mike Phillips has students that are 8 years old to 88 years old. In Mike's words, if they can pick up a DA and get results, we all can.
How can I help?
I for one really appreciate the time you invest into the Autogeek forum. I also appreciate the number of times you chimed into this thread to help out and actually share the forum rules. This is something I should have done earlier on or one of our actual Moderators but alas... it didn't happen.
So thank you Paul for taking the high road and helping out.
You've twice made the comment that this is not a public forum as if to suggest that by being privately owned what is written here is not open to the public. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Everthing written here is viewable by the public, no membership is required. i'm well aware that this is not a publically owned forum, few are, but in the context of my original comment I believe "public forum" is an accurate description..
Call it what you like but this forum is privately owned and has rules that everyone can choose to abide by or simply find a forum that better suits your tastes. The forum rules are boundaries that let people know what is acceptable behavior and what is not acceptable behavior. Besides that, as stated in the forum rules Autogeek can and will close or move threads that become problems at their discretion.
Now that I've come to work where I can type a heck of a lot more efficiently, I've chimed in where I think is needed. I don't really see any further need for this thread to continue on. The original problem has been dealt with and the original thread has been moved back to the public forum.
I'll go ahead and re-open this thread but if any member decides to take it upon themselves to start posting and causing ANY kind of problem then I will play the role of Moderator and simply close it and then deal with the problem member. The last thing I have time for is to babysit a thread or a person so think long and hard about anything you "feel" is important enough to add to this thread.
Thank you everyone ahead of time for your participation.
