I don't think it's necessarily bad to clay often, but I also don't think it's necessary to do so in most cases.
I don't hesitate to use an ultra fine clay (I use Sonus green) to spot-clay areas that need it after a wash. Usually behind the wheels is where I notice areas most in need. It's very gentle and with a light touch and proper lubrication it may noy even remove the LSP. Even so, I probably only find myself needing to do this once or twice a month. And usually re-wax the area (maybe use some AW) clayed just to be safe.
As for a full claying, at least on my own cars, I don't feel the need to do one for at least 6 months after the previous. And even then I can usually get away with an ultra fine clay. It's only on customer cars where I've had to use something stronger (Sonus gray) and that can leave behind a bit of marring. Not a big issue as a polishing followed. But here's a case where I would suggest it's not a good idea to clay frequently - when using a more aggressive clay.
Bottom line, I just don't see a need to do a full claying more than twice a year. But as for spot-claying with an ultra fine, I will do it anytime it's necessary.

Have you tried, Pinnacle Ultra Poly Clay?
Pinnacle Ultra Poly Clay is designed for frequent use. Whereas our original clay is recommended to use once or twice a year, this ultra fine grade of elastic detailing clay can be used as often as necessary to maintain a slick, reflective finish. Use it once a month or as needed for spot-cleaning – Pinnacle Ultra Poly Clay is gentle yet effective on all types of paint!
Although Ultra Poly Clay is a very fine grade of clay, it is effective at removing contamination build-up (6 -12 months without claying). Ultra Poly Clay retains all the characteristics of our original Poly Clay. The difference lies in the Ultra Poly Clay’s softer, finer consistency that is gentler on the vehicle.
Plus, Pinnacle Ultra Poly Clay has superior elasticity as compared to heavier grades of clay. The clay can be reshaped and stretched repeatedly without losing its flexibility. Properly stored in its plastic case, Pinnacle Ultra Poly Clay will retain its elastic nature and workability.
Use Pinnacle Ultra Poly Clay as often as necessary to maintain a silky, slick finish on your vehicle.
I'm thinking about getting this.

I thought maybe it was because I clayed during washing, but then I took another piece of the same clay (cut it in thirds) a couple weeks ago and used the lube and had the same thing happen. Not sure if it's normal or if it's a bad piece of clay. That was the first time I clayed this car, but I didn't have problems with it on other darker cars. But that shows how abrassive it can be. It wasn't easy to polish out either.
