Why the Flex?

Just curious, why so much hype about the Flex? I understand what it does and that it fills the gap between PC/UDM and a rotary, but, I don't think this is a new idea is it? Why so much hype about the Flex compared to the Makita BO6040, which offers a choice between using the forced rotation and not?

Am I missing something?
 
Yes, a New piece of Detailing equipment that lives up to the HYPE! You have to own one to know. If you don't have one ,you are missing something!
 
I don't doubt that it's a great product and does everything everyone says it does (okay, maybe a little bit... ;) ). I'm sure it's vastly superior in terms of speed and ability to a PC, and I'm sure it's far safer in my hands than a rotary... I'm just wondering, is that not true of other forced rotation DA polishers such as the Makita? If not, what is it about the Flex that makes it superior, if so, why does the Flex get so much more hype than the others (other than the fact that it's "new")?
 
We have just developed the first adapter that will allow the Makita B06040 users to utilize the Edge2000 system on that forced rotation DA machine. From our testing so far it reduces the vibrations and offers perfect snap on centering. The flex will be a much harder machine to adapt to because of the customized backing plate that incorporates the gear into the backing plate. The Makita seems to have more power but does not have the adjustable speed trigger. However it does have a speed dial near the back of the machine to change speeds on the fly, it has a switch to convert the machine from forced rotary to just random orbit, and the makita is selling for about $30.00 less.
 
Any idea on when the Edge2000 system will be released for the Makita?? I love my edge system and would like to upgrade to a force rotational machine.
 
I have made few posts on differences between XC 3401 VRG and BO6040. They can be found on MOL archive and on DU. There was also a good post on same subject on Autopia recently.

Cliff's notes: BO6040 has number of disadvantages biggest one being that it is very user unfriendly (hard to control) when used in forced orbit mode when compared to Flex.

Let me put it this way: Recently I met briefly with two high level pros with many many years of experience. I brought my XC and my BO6040 with me. They were not aware of my thoughts on Makita. Both tried out BO6040 and within minutes concluded they don't like it, put it away, and spent rest of the time polishing with Flex. In other words: Specs are just part of the story when it comes to tools. Other part, that can be argued of playing even bigger role if specs are close enough, is how easy it is to use. BO6040 would have to run circles around XC, or XC would have to be significantly less able to correct paint than it is, for me to accept what I find as flaws of BO6040 and live with them. From my experience with forced orbit tools (and I have tried them all) nothing comes even close to XC 3401 VRG.

Within 30 days the adapters will be available for purchase.

You make an adapter for the Flex, I'll pry buy one lol, can't be w/o my Edge pads :)
 
I thought you can't use small pads with the flex or use different attachments like the carpet brushs

For those that are reading this: Please notice skittering / "desire" of a tool to flip out underneath you seems to be characteristic of every tool with "vertical orientation". This is a case with Festool too and even PC can show it under right circumstances. I find "horizontal" designs with bale handles (like rotaries and XC 3401 VRG) "stable" in that regard.
 
I love my Makita, I love my Makita.....9227 that is! and I love it even more since I took the bale handle off and switched to a side handle, if you ain't tried it then you don't know what you're missing, kinda like doughnuts and Budweiser - thought that would suck till I tried it and gained 10 pounds in a week!
