ive Noticed Over The Few Monthes Ive Been Here Some Of You Guys Use Dawn Soap To Wash Your Car. Im Wondering Why ?? Its A Dish Soap. Why Not Use A Car Wash Soap Ment For Cars

Dawn is used by some for an initial wash to remove wax. However I do not recommend this. There are other products made for car paint finishes that will do the same thing. Leave the Dawn in the sink!

I don't on my cars, but sometime you need the high pH of dawn to really strip the dirt and cheap wax off the paint. IMO It's best not too. I know Zaino said to use Dawn before using their products.

o ok that explanes it. thanks guys:cheers:

i was just thinking cant you use solvent on the car?? if you want to remove the wax

P21s makes a paint cleanser. Try that or even Meguiar's APC+ with a 400 to 1 dilution ratio. Solvent is a no no unless you use something like Meguiar's Body solvent to remove tar and such. Try claying your vehicle, it will remove the wax as well and clean the paint from contaminants.

why is solvent a nono?i have a solvent from a detail company they say its safe on all paints

Like menitoned dawn is used to strip old wax and such.

I have used dawn before on really oxized paint to help, its not a regular occurnce but it is smothing that can be usefull. Dont write it off. There is always a time and a place

What happened was some guy decided to offer a synthetic wax for sale, and decided to smack on carnaubas as old-school. He didnt even call his product a wax like it is , but a polish which it isnt. He then told everyone to wash their old carnauba off with Dawn as it strips grease in his sink, so it must work equally well on a car, not remembering that carnauba is more than just an oil or grease. He also failed to take into account that an extremely alkaline product, used to often, could damage rubber surrounds and might be overused by his legion of fans. So ...many years later, even though he recanted, many still believe the myth of the dishwashing liquid Dawn.

what about palmolive:D :D
Same as Dawn. It you want a thorough car wash shampoo to strip wax, why not use Megs NXT with Poorboy's Bug Squash?

I used to work at a place that used Balmolive, and went so far as to bring my own stuff in a squirt bottle when there would be a dark car to clean. It may be "gentle on hands", but not on paint, that which it was never intended for. :(

And so. to remove old (or new) wax or sealant from paint, you recommend ______________________. Assume I am not doing a deep cleaning, just geeting the old stuff off so I can experiment with something else. I generally use IP for this, but I read somewhere this is not a great idea, even though it seems very effective.

1. Paint Cleaner

2. Paint Polisher

3. Alcohol/Water wipe down

CAN I JUST USE WAX WITH A CLEANER IN IT? OR CAN I WIPE DOWN WITH A SOLVENT INSTEAD OF ALCOHOL??

Cleaner wax will work. What kind of solvent? alcohol 50/50 water mix will work also. However this is better for spot removal. Paint cleaner is a better choice. Claying works also.

yes, and yes.

AIO or Cleaner waxes have chemical and abrasive cleaners in them. The reason alcohol is offered over other solvents, is it immediately flashes off into the environment. (check your qd products, most contain some alcohol). There are many paint/wax/sealant strippers on market from 3M , Prepsol, and even Acyrsol.
