I've seen DIY garage tint Youtube videos as well as purported professional tint videos, and feel somewhat frozen / scared by what I see as 'general practice' during their processes provided the care I put into my car. How do you choose a good place to have high-quality ceramic or other high-grade tint applied - do you just choose a certified shop and hope to not have to deal with much damage, or do you discriminate and ensure they understand you don't want them f-ing with your car?

Do it yourself if your super concerned. No one will take care of your car like you, and unless you stand there the whole time you won't know what will happen.
So either do it yourself or take it in and clean it up after.

Are you a part of a car club? Or do you know someone who is really car savvy? Chances are they will be able to recommend you a good person. Like detailers, I feel the best window tint specialists tend to end up being well known in their respective areas.

Word usually gets around about really high quality work for those who want to know about it.

-They've been in business for at least 5 years
-They are proud to show-off the portfolio of their
previous work
-They offer several different tint types
-They know the legal % of tint allowed
-They have the expertise to form the tint for rear windows:
From just one piece of tinting material!!

This is what I do. When dealing with a new shop I ALWAYS explain to the owner/manager about how particular I am up front. I remind them of this on every visit too just in case their memory is slipping

I drove from Tulsa to Oklahoma City (2 hours) to get one of my cars tinted. I heard he was the best in Oklahoma. I was thoroughly impressed. He does some high profile NBA stars as well (Durant cough)

Just research your area and talk to as many people as you can about it. I'm sure you'll find somewhere worthwhile

I was just talking to a tint guy in Chicago and he told me he can't do windshields with clear (to block the UV from heating the car but not light). I asked why, he said there are rain channels on the inside of the windshield that make this risky unless it is removed.

What rain channels are on the INSIDE of a windshield? My initial reaction is this sounds fishy. Any opinions?

Windshields are basically a laminate, sandwiched between
two pieces of auto-glass (a safety glass configuration).

Surely this vehicle component's perimeter is
sealed-up during the lamination process(es).

I don't see how "rain channels" can be formed within
this glass-sandwich during said lamination process(es).

However: Nothing is beyond the realm of possibility...

I found my window tinter through a regional BMW forum. He is about 2 hrs. away from me, but is mobile and I paid him double to come to my house to do it. It was well worth it since I don't trust anyone with my car and he did a great job! Usually searching on Google, "best window tint (name of closest large city)" will yield good results from car forums.
