Is anybody moving from a different operating system. If you are could you explain some reasons why ie better battery life, better preformace, more options ,etc

Bill,

For the time being I'm staying put with Windows 7. This has to be the most stable operating system I've used from Microsoft so since it ain't broken I ain't fixing it...:dblthumb2:

Besides, I just bought my very first Mac Book Pro with the 15" Retina display and 512GB solid state hard drive.... :props:

We have been talking about this at work for a while because we will be supporting Win8 at launch.

If you have Win 7 there is literally no reason to update whatsoever. The main difference from previous Windows OS is going to be that the "Metro" interface is optimized for touch screens. MS is releasing their "Surface" tablet soon to take full advantage of the new interface.

From a security standpoint the one interesting feature is the sandboxed Internet Explorer browser which should prevent a lot of the java/flash exploits from causing viruses and malware on your computer.

Im on 7 on my alienware here on my specs for my alienware guys and girls

So far 7 runs great. it seems as if that 7 is great right now and maybe windows 9 will be better in 2 to 3 years

Most of the mfg. computer community are worried that Windows 8 will be a failure. I also have finally got Windows 7 to work. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Alot of companies were told to update their XP machines to Windows 7, they did this and it cost in time and money. Now they want them to dump 7 and go to Win.8 Why ?? Micro$oft needs the money. How about upgrading Windows 7 to SP-2 instead. Micro$oft wants everyone to ditch Win. XP so they can stop supporting it early. Apple offers their operating system for less than Micro$oft. So what does that tell you. I'm going to stick with Windows 7. I am currently looking at Linux for my laptop, its Free and you can keep older equipment going.

Unless you want to work for MS for free, stay away from it or any new OS they launch for the first year. After about a year all the suckers, I meant early adopters, have help MS get all the bugs worked out & then it is usually safe to upgrade.

Check out Ubuntu. You don't need to know all the command line stuff that has kept people away from Linux for so long anymore. My netbook dual boots to Ubuntu and the Linux side is SO much faster than the Win7 partition.

I'm a licensed Microsoft Retailer....I have windows 8 running on a couple of my office computers...been playing with 8 for a while now...it is different. That being said, you need to have memory....LOTS AND LOTS of memory. For it to run properly, 8 gigs should do it. You can get by with 6, but 8 is better, especially if you graphics memory is shared with system memory. It appears it is as responsive as a 7, maybe a little better. Both PCs where upgraded from Win 7..I'm planing on doing a "clean" win 8 (meaning, wipe out the hard drive and install win 8, rather than upgrading an existing win 7 install) install this weekend. See if that speeds up performance. I haven't installed it on a laptop yet however, i have read a bunch of tests.. it does wifi better, which will help battery life. It also REALLY DOES turn off ports when not in use...unlike previous Windows releases. It does a better job managing them to save power. It also does a better job of thottling processor power which will really help battery life. I've seen charts where it has extending battery life from just a few minutes to a couple of hours. Again, I need to verifly this info so take it with a grain of salt.

Windows7 runs great no reason to update for the new coming version which as usual will be full of bugs.

Hard to say at this point if Windows 8 will be one of those quick-transitional OS's to the next version of Windows (e.g. - Windows Millenium, Windows Vista are two examples that never caught on for good reason). The proof is always going to be in vendor application support.

For the casual computer user I would always recommend *NOT* to upgrade for at least 6 months so that application vendors can work out the bugs in their applications. If you have no choice and you are purchasing a new system then ask your sales rep for "downgrade rights" so you have the option to downgrade to Windows 7 for no more cost than a DVD.

Analysts: Windows 8 downgrade rights crucial to success - Computerworld

Intuit's Quickbooks Pro comes to mind, and man do they have fun working the compatibility bugs out of their applications; at the expense of their customers. If you are using a specific application used in the industry for medical, engineering and drafting, accounting, etc... then always check out support for Windows 8. It does take that long (6 months) before you get a good idea how well your applications would fare.

OT!

On Win7, where is the 'clipboard'? I've tried everything I know to find it.

Thanx!

There are times I really miss 3.1

I have used win7 on my MacBook Pro for a small amount of time and its ok. As with win8 and any new microsoft OS there are gonna be plenty of bugs and fixes. They never seem to get it right until they release the first service pack. I would hold off on the Win8.

I will put it on my box in the basement this weekend, just to try it out.

Every other Win OS turns out to be worth using. Win8 falls into the in between good OS area for me. I played with a Beta copy a while back and absolutely hated it mainly because of the Metro interface. As mentioned a few posts above, you'll need TONS of memory to run it properly. I don't own any hardware that will even support 8gigs of RAm and I'm sure not going to buy all new hardware to run a new OS. Win7 works just fine on my oldish laptop and my wife's and daughter's netbooks. Ubuntu server works perfect for my old desktop turned media server.

I can see 8 working on the Surface, but not for any sort of desktop usage. Hopefully MS proves me wrong but I'm surely not optimistic about it going off past experiences.

It's actually a cross platform device. PC/Computer has become a bad word for Microsoft...the new word is DEVICE. This OS, Win 8, is a cross device operating system.
Win 8 seems really bullet proff. One of the PCs I upgraded has lots of applications on it, including Quickbooks 2009 and the upgrade went virtually free of problems. Every applicaiton is working perfectly...which by the way, is very surprising. Just fyi...

I went from Win7 to Linux Mint in August. Before that I was running Win7 and Ubuntu as a dual boot. Lots of things I still have to play with on the Linux Mint, but I like it a bit more than Win7. For the price of putting a Windows operating system on a PC, why not just run Linux? (Except for the time-investment to learn to use it as you would Windows...)

Windows 7 has a clipboard, just not a clipboard viewer. You can download a free utility that adds this feature or you can transfer the utility from a Windows XP system (clipbrd.exe).

I was originally mildly interested in it for my desktop PC (still need windows, I do a LOT of PC based gaming). Now not so much. You used to be able to toggle between the new Metro UI and the old Win7 style UI. Then during beta they removed that ability and forced everyone in to Metro. I just don't think Metro is a good call for a desktop PC. However I game with a lot of MS guys on WoW and I'm sure one of them will eventually convince me later down the road to upgrade.

I DO think it will be an excellent OS for any portable device with a touchscreen (laptop, tablet, etc.) or kiosk setups. My "best guess" is that Win7 is going to be the new WinXP. I.e. it's the one people will use for years until MS drags them kicking and screaming from it because they're ending support.
