Wool pad question...

Do most only use a wool pad and rotary to remove sanding marks? Can an orange pad, rotary, and an agressive compound remove severe defects(non-sanding marks)?

I try to avoid using wool pads just because of the extra steps involved in following the wool step with foam pads to level out the swirls from the wool pad. I find that I can usually remove some pretty severe defects with a medium cutting or a cutting foam pad with the rotary. Sometimes in the interest of saving time when dealing with very severe defects it is better to use wool then follow up with a white pad. I have used an orange pad to remove sanding marks too.

I just purchased tufbuf wool pads. They are 5" which fit perfectly on my 3m bp (the one in my sig). They work great and they finish down really well. I need to play with them more but I see myself reaching for those more. You will see some marring but not nearly as much as say with the megs solo wool pads. Plus they don't shed!!!

I myself do not use wool pads. For really neglected paint, I use 3M Fast Cut Plus and the 3M green foam pad that goes with it. Works wonders without all the marks left behind from the wool pad.

When removing sanding marks with a rotary I ONLY use wool. The wool are much more easier to control and cut a lot faster. Foam will also generate a lot more heat (which can be dangerous) and when it comes down to tracers or pig tails, the foam will take forever when compared to the wool.

The wool can also be more flexible, better, safer in some tight curved spaces. Double side pads are really nice for some areas too

and where the roof meets the quarter panel here...
