Wrong choices?

I am getting better at it now but when there are curves if the edge of the pad runs into that curve it stops. My technique is getting better and I am using the 5.5 flat pads.

What is driving me crazy is that even though I got rid of most all the fine lines there still are a few here and there that arent deep but didnt go away. I am using Zaino product and that has proven to be different then what I have watched on the vids. For the swirl remover my product dries up after 2-3 section passes. Its not nearly as thick as what I see in the vids from Mike when he primes a pad. My product is pretty watery but it still seems to work pretty good.

On black paint with a LED light I still see some very fine lines. I have never detailed a car using a light to check results but I imagine its near impossible to rid every single little line. With black its just so easy to see them vs other colors.

I have a black car as well, and you are correct in that you will not remove every defect. Reduction rather than total elimination is the goal (at least for me). Once you are done correcting, work on your washing technique to reduce the introduction of swirls, etc.

Did you mark your backing plate with a black line so you can easily see if it is spinning? If not, do so! It makes it very easy to see if the pad is spinning.

With the right technique the PC can make magic. Just look at Tads work.

I'm a Flex guy. I bought the griots first with the same fear as you. Luckily (since it was not fun to use) it broke down after a few hours use and when I returned it I asked Dwayne about the Flex. I have never looked back since using it the first time.

Any machine can burn through paint if you hold it in one place or on an edge and/or the paint is thin enough.

Brian,

It sounds like you need a stronger pad/product combo. I like Zaino products, but ZPC is not a strong polish (I'm assuming you're using ZPC). A pad with a stronger cut will help a lot though. What pad are you using?

For polishes, I'm a fan of Menzerna. Menzerna SIP (IS1500) is a great polish for getting out more serious defects. I'd suggest getting that before getting a new polisher.

Regards,

Dan.

P.s. I have a PC (7336) and just got a Flex. I've had the PC for several years and successfully used it to remove some fairly serious defects with Menzerna polishes.

I had pretty good success finally. I had to go back to "by hand" because I reaplized after some thought that Zaino is meant to be applied by hand. I did use the ZPC swirl remover by machine and the cut was fine with the orange LC flat pad but the product is thin and meant to be easy to apply by hand or machine. It kept drying up on me after 2-3 section passes.

I got used to the PC after some time but I dont think I will be using it much at all so I will stick with it. I dont think I will be having to do all this again for some time and certainly hope not because that was 3 days of work and I am beat.

I am going to post my pics and newbie results and will link them to this thread so you guys can find it.

I have both and each has its merits. For a new truck, the PC should be fine. I would apply Opti Coat to permanently save your new clear! A white pad should be all the cut you need.
