I ordered a pad kit that contained 2 white, 1 gray and 1 blue pad. I used a white pad to apply swirl remover to my factory paint with no problem. I then used a white pad and swirl remover on the wife's car. It was hit and repair required paint work. The shop left swirl marks that took me 2 tries to remove them. Should I have used something like an orange pad or was it just me?

Sounds perfect to me,better safe than sorry.
From experience and what I have read the clear coat on repaints are often times harder to correct.
You may also want to follow up with a finshing polish and the grey pad.

I can believe that. You can't be using a lot of clearcoat on thousands of cars. They didn't orange peel it as it is a perfect match to the factory shine. I guess they just got in a bit of a hurry. Wife has pedals setup for her so if her car isn't available she can't drive another. Hey she's happy. Life is good. lol
