So, I've had no school since Tuesday because of the snow. That means that I've done nothing but play xbox and surf the ag forums :D Anyways, last night my xbox froze and kept freezing. Later on I got the e74 and e79 errors. Unplugged and replugged everything, then it just kept freezing. I let it cool and finally got the 3 red rings of death with no error message. Found out it was the CPU heatsink and I ordered a repair kit. So, how many of you all that game have gotten the dreaded rrod? If you got it, how did you go by fixing it?
 
I don't have an XBOX 360 but I know your pain. My PS3 died for the second time since 2007 this past New Years day. I have to replace the DVD/Blu-ray tray on it (again). Check YouTube for videos on how to fix the problem you've got. I'm sure you'll find a bunch of them.
 
We have repaired several X-Box consoles and the "heatsink fix" just involves removing the heatsinks and adding washers and screws tha you can get at Lowes. Also the heatsink compound should be replaced with Artic Silver, available at Radio Shack. The real cure for the problem is a reflow of the motherboard in the video chip area. You can find information on how to perform this on Youtube. Look for xbox reflow. You can do this at home with a heat gun. Just carefully follow the instructions about isolation of components that should not be overheated. Bring the board up to temp slowly. The fix is in reflowing or actually resoldering the connections in the video chip area. Hope this helps. Remember the heatsink mods alone will not resolve the problem long term. Good luck!!
 
Sorry to hear it. I have 2 360's and haven't had an issue in a couple years. But back then my older model 360 went rrod on me. Luckily they had extended the warranty another year and it was as painless as an ag transaction. They sent me a box and the whole thing went quick. In the meantime I looked up the issue online because back then I played on live a lot and wanted to get back in the action. So I discovered that this silly trick actually works! I wrapped the 360 in a bath towel and turned it on. With rrod I let it sit for 20 minutes. Then I turned it off. I think let it cool for a few minutes and turned it back on. Incredibly it really did work... For awhile anyway. Got about another month out of it before I returned it and got a true repair.
 
I've sent in my 360 at least five times for the rrod error. IIRC, you may still be covered under warranty. Try contacting Microsoft; they take less than two weeks to fix it and have it back at your doorstep.

I've done the fix before..... each time it was only temporary. One lasted 3 months, the other 3 weeks. I would plan on buying a new one eventually
 
Yup ps3 makes more games, you can do the same thing a Wii and the kinect can do, the only thing I hate is that you can't play ps2 games on the slim

I still have the original PS3... But as far as the kinect, the 360 kills the PS3, since the camera for the move only tracks the controller you need to hold, the kinect actually sees you and tracks you...

Also, PS3 uses blue ray discs that allows them to put a lot more info in them, resulting on better graphics and sound.

I still been wanting to buy the fat ps3 as my bros calls it lol. I have always been a fan of playstation ever since the first one came out

I have recently purchased the kinect and have to say it is quite the unit. dwarfs the wii and would predict it dwarfs the PS3 moving thing..... though I don't have that for my PS3 so I can't directly compare.

What I will say is I own 3 separate PS3 (for the bluray function) and a single Xbox360
 
I got the 3 rings after owning a 360 for 1 week. Had on e of the originals. MS replaced it with a new unit which gave me the 3 rings 2years later. MS also replaced that one. i rarely play it anymore. Microsoft just doenst make a quality product. I use the PS3 and drive GT5 and play Blu-Rays. The 360 and my library of games are about to go on ebay.
 
They certainly did rush the 360 to market and the first years worth of batches paid the price. I did my research when I bought the second one (needed a dvd player in the other room anyway) In my research I found that by looking at the serial numbers you could know which version you were buying (those with the newer and smaller/run colder chips or the older overheating version) That way I was able to avoid any issue with my second box. The old one never broke down again after they fixed it. Some extra care must be taken with the older ones. You must make sure you don't enlcose the 360.
Also, to your point of Microsoft not making a quality product... The original xbox 360 I bought probably more than a decade ago and played like crazy.... I eventually gave to my nephew. He still plays it to this day. That machine was a beast and had twice the power of the PS2.

I still got my fat 60gig. I did have to replace it once because all 4 usb ports fried on the unit. Got a replacement fat 60 under an extended warranty. The PS3 has been one of the best blu-ray players for years(until now).

I heard you can still buy the fat Japanese version. The reason why I am still looking for one is cause I am a fan of DBZ games :)

Well I know mine isn't under warranty and I ordered that kit for the X Clamp repair. I'm good at building computers so this should be a breeze. I've watched videos and it seems simple. If it doesn't work I'm just going to buy a new Xbox....
 
I had RROD once, sent it in and had it back in no time. Too bad the initial Xbox 360 had such a horrible failure rate, I remember reading ~30% and 60%. More likely the latter.

I bought a PS3 when they were new, $950 out the door. Sold it in a week or so for $900. Too much $ for video games and Blu-ray player, plus I needed a new timing belt for the Audi.
