Yet another PTG doubt

I've been doing some research about paint gauge meters, I know there's a lot in the forum and I've read some of it... wish I could keep on reading EVERYTHING!

The thing is, I don't really have much time to get a PTG, as I live abroad (Chile), while a friend of mine is currently visiting FL and I was planning to having it shipped to him before he comes back.

Now, from what I've read so far, unless I have an ultrasonic PTG I can't get clearcoat-only measurements... are all ultrasonic PTG's $2k and above? I found this one on eBay, says ultrasonic, but it definitely doesn't sound right.

The way I see it, it looks like a risk to start working on someone's car without first assessing the clear coat, and considering I'm not really seasoned in car paint, I'd probably miss more than a thing or two should I try doing it by eye only. I'm willing to spend on a good gauge, as long as I can actually afford it.

I have never used the three gauges you link to so all I can say is buyer beware.


This is a brand with an established name that you could count on to work as described for a more money....

I'd say don't turn buffing out cars into rocket science. If you use common sense you'll be fine.

Read my article here and put into practice what it teaches as most of your customer just starting out will be bringing you daily drivers and you should be doing either one step to the paint with a one-step cleaner/wax or two steps for more money using a dedicated polishing step followed by a dedicated waxing step.

Neither of the above require a paint thickness gauge.

If you do want to get a paint thickness gauge then look at these two,

Use a paint thickness gauge for,

  • Marketing
  • Measuring to make the Go or No Go decision

Right! I guess I'll start with safer jobs, have a good read at the Show Car Shine guide (ordering the signed one as I write), and only get one in a couple months, along with a Flex I plan on shipping to Chile.

PM was actually to thank you for motivating me on taking that class! The thread link was just a post-scriptum :)

Thanks for all the info! During the next few days I've left specific time to go deeper within the forums so I can get more answers without asking questions every other day :P
