Often times a car with a bad finish is a pretty good indicator of its service record also. While not always, usually they seem to go together.
 
Green cars are more harmful to the environment?

I always though yellow cars were the worse.

Yup, and you can pretty much bet if the outside is sort of a wreck the inside isn't far behind if not worse.

I think it gets out of hand when the beginners are overcome with this need that you have to have everything, every color pad, every wax on the market, and that can get costly and very unnecessary.

Usually if the paint looks like it's ready to fall off and or is peeling it also sounds like a rattle trap too...

Or is smoking, whining, has bald tires (Usually some off brand cheap crap)....

I see a lot of cars around that the paint looks so bad it looks like primer and sometimes primer would look better...
 
I've heard the same thing. And I don't detail professionally; I just like my car to be clean.

Meh; whatcha gonna do I guess.

My in laws just don't know why I spend so much money on car care. But then, every one of their cars except the newest one (minivan that's about 3 years old) has peeling, severely failing clearcoat. We drive a 2002 Taurus that's older than their oldest car (an '05 Cavalier) with paint that's in pretty great shape, and an interior that looks new. They have peeling clearcoat, faded plastic, cracks in the dash, etc. In theory; I've spent far less if they every got their cars repainted (but they won't).

But it's to each their own. They don't mind at all driving cars with flaking paint and stained seats. So what? No skin off my nose! (Or cleacoat off my paint!).

Although; trade in value is another consideration. If they had done some basic maintenance to the paint on their cars; they would be worth hundreds or even thousands more than they are now.

And yes, like the above poster said- cheap tires are what they go for! Cheapest Wal-Mart has. And they have no idea why I would spend money for a good set of Pirelli touring tires. Actually, I just bought my second set on the car I just sold! Just shy of 100,000 miles after I bought the first set. The tires were about 50% more than the cheapies at wal-mart, and those tires last 35~50k. I also can stop better, corner better, and handle inclement weather better (in addition to being smoother and quieter). So not only did I spend less on tires in the last 100,000 miles- I was driving safer!

But what can you do.

Exactly...

Thousands is more like it....

When all they had to do was wash them about every 2 weeks and wax like 3 to 4 times a year and the paint would be pretty much OK.

Might need some work, but at least it wouldn't be falling off the car....

Interiors, well just wipe down with a simple cleaner that protects when they wash and vacuum.

And it really doesn't cost all the much either over the cars life.

Nope

And, I hate to say it, but an auto-wash with brushes would've helped too. Swirls, yes. But at least it wouldn't live with bird poop and other crud on it as they are, pretty much, completely unwashed (the occasional spray with a hose and wash with dish soap and a rag at home on a nice day, maybe 3-4 times a year is it.)

Ideally; a good quality wash and a little wax! How hard is that?

Car detailing is actually the cheapest obsession I have. Mods for the Vette and my road bicycles are far more costly!

Can he piss up a rope? If so I'd follow his advice. If not then his advice is useless.
 
I wash my truck every week and wax it every six. Alot of people including my brother and parents dont understand why I do it. I like because I can get away from others and be able of focus and think about things in life. A nice looking vehicle is just a small benefit
