Yup, Some dealers even have their own "swirl-installer" car wash that they run customer cars thru thinking they ar doing them a favor washing their cars.
 
Looked like the famous BMW Jet Black (please correct me if i'm wrong). That particular color is notorious for being soft as warm butter. Beautiful work on it and tell the owner to put a sign on the steering wheel "Do NOT Wash"!

That is a correct assessment of its workability.

I wonder why dealerships don't at least go with a touchless set up. Cost?

Yep, the problem is, at least in the US, BMW requires dealers to wash a car every time it goes in for service, so unless the service advisor tells the customer a wash is included, they have no choice to decline it.

I would
Be declining every time. but I try to educate the owners so they are aware of the consequences.
