After a new car purchase, I saw swirls in the paint. Being no stranger here ( only reading ) and detailing for many years, I wanted proper correction to be done. The dealer had the car buffed, in house. Yet, I don't believe they clayed the car. Only a finishing glaze and seal. I've beed reading about Lexus soft, and I've never owned a black car. Any advise from the masses? I still see very faint swirls that I can remove.

Thus far, I think I'll try ONR for the wash and spray detail. Normally I buy "kits" or add a step here and there to the "kits" I tend stick with a single brand. My last bit of the Wolfgang total swirl remover kit is gone. I corrected a 2005 sc430 ( blue ) from a swirl monstrosity to glass. So, the kits and my 7424 work. Might there be recommendations for black?

As well, it seems microfiber is the next investment for wiping the car down. Anything " store bought " is a no? Any help is appreciated.

My car make is different from yours , but I was basically asking the same question since yesterday.

So far I was advised to use M205 for paint correction , applying it with the DA buffer.

I will do two bucket washing with dish-wash detergent (you will not get this advise from here, because detergent removes all the protective elements from the surface of the clear coat) , then I will hose it off with low pressure water stream, dry entire thing with microfiber towels ( I hear you there, some of those are NO GO) and then get to work with M205 and DA, using a blue pad.
I think I will learn how well DA removes fine scratches and swirl marks as I do it. The M205 has to be removed while still wet (2 medium pressure passes and 2 no pressure passes then immediately buff off with the microfiber) , so I guess I will be able to determine how well this method works almost as soon as I do it.

I plan to seal the car with DG105 or M21 , depending how successful I am with the M205+DA in removing the fine scratches (better results -> follow with DG 105; less than what I expect ---> seal with M21 and do another round of M205 in spring).

If you want to go more 'upscale' route you may purchase Pinnacle or Wolfgang polishes and waxes.

Hopefully someone will give you advise you are looking for.

Best regards,

The Wolfgang Twins, some foam pads and your Porter Cable will also take care of the swirls in your Lexus is350. These polishes work great on a very wide spectrum of paints including both hard and soft.

After you get your car's finish back to where you want it then read this article...

DON'T WASH CAR !!!!!!!!!!!

Lexus Obsidian Black is quite soft.

I have had good luck with Menzerna FG400 on an Orange LC Light Cutting Pad for compounding (if needed) and a finishing polish like Menzerna SF4500 (or SF4000) on a white or black LC foam pad.

There is plenty of Lexus specific information on the Club Lexus forums... there is a detailing sub-forum there as well. Plenty of topics related to obsidian paint as well.

Welcome

Yet, I don't believe they clayed the car. Only a finishing glaze and seal.

I am going to generalize here but I would bet that no dealer is ever going to "clay" a new car, let alone "seal" it.

The most you get is a glaze. So when I hear that you see "some" swirls, chances are that you will see a lot more once you wash the car - that should get rid of the hiding oils. Lets hope that is not the case.

Towels - Purchase right here from AG, and don't be cheap with towels. The only time your paint is in danger of swirls is when it is touched. wash, dry, wipe with QD for example.

Enjoy that car - it is a beast.

Being that it is black, you should put a coating on it. That is what I would do.

Oh man, I smile everyday I walk to my parking spot. Thank you. I am somewhat OCD with my details, and I spent an hour chatting with the prep guy. Great people. They had ordered the new rupes da and were awaiting it to come in. So, they are legit. The detailed uses all Meg's products and said they have a glaze and seal product that's a final coat. From what i know, they did a two step swirl remover and the glaze and seal with a da. I made a buddy, so for 60 bucks I can have my car " detailed ".

As such, my normal steps are the following -
- wash i use griots garage soap but looking for something better )
- clay I last used a nano skin sponge and nano lube on my moms lexus and loved it. Longevity is about 2 cars if that. I'm worried about maring on black. Clay recommendations please?
- wash
- wolfgangs total swirl kit ( tsr 3.0, glaze, seal, spray wax )
- it's all pad matched in the kit - I let the seal sit for an hour
- I like Meg's tech 2.0 as another top coat or just pain ol Meg's carnauba ( red can )
- then I go over it once more with a spray detailer to pickup any missed areas.

I don't know how to post pics. But I will and show you the Lexus I corrected ( moms car ) and my old VW gli with metalic paint. Both got the Wolfgang kit and " needed love ".

Appreciate comments. Please keep em coming.

I didn't see the detailer area. Thank you. I'll def check that out.

Is ONR really all that is. I live in a condo and have a garage but no water. As well, kindly make microfiber recommendations as I'm not well versed on this

Yes it is - go to youtube and search for Gary Dean washing method video - follow it.
As far as the towels, Super Plush Junior Microfiber Towel, 16 x 16 inches - something like this. You have black paint, so you are in a different league. You want the softest, plushest kind.

Would love to see some pics of that new is350.

This is my Black 2013 GC polished out with WG Finishing Glaze / WG DGPS 3.0 topped with Blackfire Black Ice (a must have for a black paint job)

The third pic is a friends dads 05 Passat that was hammered, I detailed it this past weekend, I used Blackfire Total Polish and Seal and topped it with Blackfire Black Ice. The Black Ice is by far my favorite for black paint now. It leaves it dripping wet.

WOW!! The second and third pic amaze me. I was reading about black ice. Now I need it!! Checking out the YouTube on ONR now while I cuss the deadskins.

And these shots aren't photoshopped etc, just from my S III cell. Black Ice is the real deal.

The thing about pictures.... they don't show real perfection or imperfection, IMHO.

I had some stunning effects on pictures if I had a bright sunshine , blue skies and some shade (like under trees) to park car under and some very bright objects to the side of the car (like wall of the house reflecting a bright sunlight). No Photoshop needed!
The effect is created by a very strong contrast, by the shade that you put your car panels under which hides any fine scratches/swirls and the bright daylight+contrasting images reflected on the side/panels of the car, which make it look as if the car was covered with a real mirror.

You will only get the real picture if you put your car under direct sunlight and stand under the worst possible angle to expose any imperfections/dullness. That's when you see what you really have.
I saw those (pictures taken from the most disadvantageous angles) in a thread of Mike Phillips where he shows the holograms left by his rotary (and exposed after rubbing the panel clean by special liquids) and then he shows how he corrected it and brought to perfection.
And he uses Canon Rebel.

Your own eyes and the natural conditions where you can inspect the car under direct sunlight and from all the different angles is the only way , IMHO, to know how great the car looks.

The important thing to note is that not everyone wants to pay $$$$$ for a full blown paint correction, they may just want a decent shine. And in the case of this Passat that's all they wanted on an 8 year old car with 200,000 miles on it. They were not interested or prepared to spend hundreds of $$$ on a multi step paint correction. The bottom line is the customer was more than satisfied, so it's more about meeting customer expectations. And the Blackfire products delivered big time.

You are correct, I didn't mean to argue to the contrary.

My point was about pictures representing the paint condition.

Great work there! Even though the quality of the pictures give away your secret weapon (cell phone) :awman::haha::goodjob2:

Just an FYI, yes you can do a lot more in PS, but every camera has a processor in it, that the engineers programmed for you, in other words, they did the "photoshopping" for you.

I can guarantee you, that the black VW looked better in person, since the phone can't capture it life like.

Thanks for the input.

I know your not, it's all good. Just commenting on the fact that the products did an amazing job. But trust me, my Genesis Coupe in the photos is swirl free :props:
