Speed for rupes machine

Lowes and Home Depot never have a good selection of nuts, bolts, washers etc. so I got mine at ace hardware.

$1 from Home Depot. Perfect fit.

Yep that's what I got but just got a single so it was like 10 cents.

Have the washer mod that Kevin Brown includes if requested.

Speed wise, I hover around 4-5. 6 is a bit much. 4-5 is perfect for MF slow compounding. I find on 6 you're driving the pad pretty hard.

Never over 4. I find that focusing the pad and work area at a lower speed is much more effective than using a higher speed and pressure. Many times a higher speed doesn't mean faster correction as the pad can hydroplane.

You already have the Rupes Microfiber pads for your Rupes polisher?

Just to note, I think when Mike posted his question, this one that started this thread...

I am curious as t what speed works for those that use the Rupes.
I have not had any problems but I was curious?
Thanks

It was probably in the context of foam pads. Mike Lambert would know for sure but that's how I read it since the MF pads were not available at the time of his post and only a handful of people in the world have the beta and production versions.

It wasn't till post #20 that I added the announcement that Rupes Microfiber Pads had arrived to our warehouse on December 10th, (this last Wednesday), and were then added to the AG store at midnight on the 11th, that was yesterday night.

So while Mike might have been asking about speeds for MF pads he didn't include that in either the title of the thread nor in the actual post.

Kind of makes sense because outside a few people that were sent the Rupes Duetto and Mini Prototypes along with the Rupes Microfiber pads back in April of this year and the pads given away at SEMA in November, I'm not really sure they've been available anywhere until yesterday.

Both of the below were posted November 11th, a few days after I returned from SEMA

This. 4 corrects very well with the right pad/polish combo.

I would like to do this washer mod but I cannot for the life of me get the backing plate off. The bolt is on so tight, everything we have tried has failed. Any suggestions?

Maybe a T-handle hex wrench or a socket hexhead bit so you can use a ratchet to get more leverage. Or, a hexhead bit in an adaptor installed in an impact tool?

I was indeed asking regarding foam pads, I should have been more clear.
I have the new mini and will be getting the rupes micro pads.
Mike,do you notice a difference in cut between the 2 blue pads?

I just did mine. I took one look at that little Allen key and said no way. IIR, its a 5mm Allen head socket.

I used a Crafstman swivel head ratchet and a Lisle socket. Hold the backing plate and it comes free pretty easily. Use a crappy socket or key, and strip it - your S.O.L.

I used this ratchet:

I didn't have any problems getting my backing plate off. Guess I got lucky.

Are you referring to any microfiber pad and any chemical or the Rupes Microfiber Pads specifically?

I'll be in the garage today doing some testing with the new Microfiber pads on the Rupes Duetto and Mini Polisher and post what speeds I find will maintain pad rotation.

I place a long closed end wrench over the Allen wrench to give me leverage and then hold the backing plate FIRMLY and the <BREAK> the bolt free. It's very tight for a reason and remember when you re-assemble the the backing plate to also tighten the hex head bolt back onto the spindle very tightly.

We've had one person send their Rupes back because it was broken and it wasn't broken it was not reassembled correctly after it was taken apart.

We fixed it here at Autogeek.

I have the pictures, and then returned it to the customer.

I took pictures to write an article to show people in the future how to avoid making the same mistake.

That's how I read and figured you meant the question.

Other's went off on speeds for MF pads? Heck we just got them in...

Not really but I've only used them a few times. I'm not a huge MF fan, at lest for the type of detail work I do.

Nothing against them... just tend to like foam for DA work and wool pads for rotary work.

I will be knocking a few cars out using the Rupes Microfiber Pad system as I will be teaching a class in January that includes them.

Is this Cindy?

My friend from MeguiarsOnline.com and a regular at the Thursday Night Open Garage classes at Meguiar's I started for Meguiar's and then ran while I was at Meguiar's?

Since this was your first post...

Welcome to AutogeekOnline!

Yes Mike, it's Cindy although TSXWench doesn't really work for me anymore since I'm driving a white Honda Accord Coupe. Which looks amazing BTW.:buffing:
I did get the backing plate off after employing a number of the tools mentioned above. Did the washer mod too. I love this Rupes machine.

Good to hear from you!

Rupes = very smooth.

I'm buffing out a brand new Mercedes tomorrow, will be using the Rupes Duetto...

:xyxthumbs:

Did some testing today, found the Rupes Microfiber Pads on the Duetto rotate pretty good on the 1 speed setting as well as the 3 speed setting.

I sanded down one of my test panels with the Rupes #2000 and #3000 sanding discs and then removed the sanding marks with the blue Rupes Microfiber Cutting Disc on both the 1 setting and the 3 setting.

The 3 setting worked better and faster for the record but I was impressed and surprised at how well these pads cut and rotated at such low speeds.

I took some videos but won't be able to post till next week.

This. Meg's MF cutting on 4 is usually where I'm at and finish on 3-3.5 with no pressure at all. :buffing:
