Horsepower War is in full effect

That Hellcat is going to be nuts! But can't go wrong with a mustang!

The Challenger was my first choice, but it was too heavy and slower then the Shelby.

If the performance numbers and reviews are good, I will consider trading in my Shelby for a 15 Challenger.

It is in full effect but as awesome as these cars are when it comes to a "Vulgar display of power" I see them as "Barrett-Jackson Future Collectables". These cars are full of ability but noone will ever get to see what they can do wrapped in plastic and mothballs, just my opinion anyways.

I am very curious, why would ANYONE buy a Z/28 Camaro when they can buy a Corvette C7 Z51 1LT, 2LT, or 3LT for much LESS? I'f i'm not mistaken, a C6 Z06 had a similar MSRP. I've driven Corvettes and Camaros and the Corvette is miles better, granted they were stock without a track suspension similar to the Z/28.

So to summarize Camaro Z/28 vs Corvette Z51. Pay 1/3 less for a BETTER car. Install suspension and brakes. Now you have a MUCH BETTER car for less.

Maybe not everyone but I know plenty that do. Almost everyone in my Mustang Club drags or tracks their cars. I only show my Shelby but drive it hard. I raced my Durango last year and am dragging and tracking my Charger this year.

Very cool. I'm surprised the Challenger hasn't had a refresh after this many years.

Add to the list: C7 ZO6 will have 620 HP.
What will be the ZR1's...750+ HP?!?!

Will the 2015+ CAFE regulations be dammed-up by the OEM's increasing prices on these high-HP vehicles?

Still like to have one of 'em!
BTW:
Anybody know what the going rate is for Human organs on the Black Market? How about an: Arm and a Leg?

Bob

Lol good thing they are giving the challenger more power. The SRT8 is slow.

Just make sure it is your left arm and leg, wouldn't want to give up the right side.

The new CAFE regs are going to kill HP and this is probably why the big three are going all out with the HP.

I will be shocked if the hellicat puts that much power down. I can't see them cranking viper spanking ponies in a V8. I know the chally weighs a ton more and all but to just release the new SRT Viper then this?

Couldn't agree more. Not sure what Chevrolet was thinking because they could have taken the SS and tricked it out a little, added the Z28 badging and sold a ton of these. Makes no sense to go the route they did when they already had the ZL1 to compete in the horsepower wars. IMO, there are a ton of financially healthy baby-boomers who were driving Z28's "back in the day" that would have jumped all over a less extravagant rebirth of the car.

Everyone has their "thing". Numbers aren't the only thing that matter to some people. Kind of like the new dual clutch transmissions. By every metric they are faster, and 'better'. But some of us just get so much joy out of a manual transmission we don't care! Likewise, there are people who love a Camaro for their own reasons, even if the same money will buy a 'vette. I'm sure there are Porsche, Benz, BMW, Audi, etc. guys who are just shaking their heads at why anyone would spend $75,000 on ANY American performance car. We all have the things we like! The Corvette is also more of a sleek American sports car. And while it is a Muscle car, at the same time, it kind of isn't. The styling of the Camaro is, in my opinion, more in line to compete with the Mustang and Challenger. And that matters a lot to some folks. Even the GORGEOUS new Corvette 'stingray', doesn't have that bad, classic look that (especially) the Camaro and Challenger have.

Now me? I'd be all over the Shelby or the Corvette long before I even considered the Camaro. But that's me. I know a couple guys who are probably already lined up at the Chevy dealer for the Z/28.

I, for one, am loving this horsepower war. It's like a repeat of the muscle car era. You know what I think? I think the market is shifting as the kids of the 60's and 70's are now middle aged, financially secure, and able to spend a bit more. Back when they were kids, they saw the horsepower wars but the cars were, often times, a car a regular joe could afford (They sold a M.I.L.L.I.O.N. mustangs a year some years in the 60's. That's unheard of today, ESPECIALLY in the performance sector). But, since they grew up oogling it and have some money now, Detroit figures they can bring them all back. Lots of retro styling in the last several years, and now, the horsepower wars are back.

I cannot wait until there are several rear-wheel drive American cars on the market pushing 600 or even 700 horsepower right off the showroom floor. (And probably right into the nearest lake or ditch shortly after some dum-dum thinks he's mario andretti and hits the traction control button because he's such a pro he doesn't need that stuff)

Come on guys really? Since you haven't figured it out yet, I'll spell it out for you......FAMILY. All of these are family cars. That's why they have a back seat. Try selling your wife on a new corvette in the garage when you have two kids. Yes they are fun to drive and a great way to get a performance car and still be able to take the kids to McDonalds. Trust me, I have a vette and a Camaro sitting in the garage. Why the Camaro? My wife got rid of her Saturn Sky Redline because she couldn't use it to "pick the kids up after school."

To be fair, you could get a base corvette AND a Ford Fiesta (which has every bit of, if not more, cargo and seating space than a Camaro or Challenger), or even a used mini-van, for the price of these cars.

I still think a lot of it is styling and nostalgia. Family could be part of it, but, that might be a BIT of a stretch when it comes to these $80,000 top-tier offerings. Might be different when considering the $30~$50k market, but at that price level, you're at an older market with adult children, or a market that is not going to be using it as a daily driver, or will have some other vehicle for the kiddos. (Not exclusively, of course. But I have to assume, a large portion of the market will fit those scenarios)

If you the driver is anything more than 5'3" tall, you need to saw off your childs legs to fit in the back of one of those. Almost as ridiculous as the Porsche commercial.

I would agree to some extent, but you'd be amazed how many of the guys that show up at the track with these things are in their mid to late 20s and put all of their eggs in one kick ass basket/family car. I always said the same thing about the LT1 Camaro, "why would I buy that instead of a vette". So I asked a guy, his answer.."no room for the kids"
