I never thought I'd say this living in Alabama, but I need a heater in my shop. It is the size of a two car garage plus a little longer. Something that is safe to use in enclosed spaces with all doors and windows shut.

Are you looking for a ventless heater or would direct vent be an option for you?
 
There was a HUGE machine shop i worked in a few years ago. We had a karosean heater that looked like a jet engine. It worked amazing and ran off of either karosean or diesel fuel. They are pretty cheap <$200 but i dont know enough about them to know if they need to be ventilated or not. I was thinking about getting one my self because soon as the sun goes down where im at it goes from 40-50 deg to 15-20.
 
I have a lasko electric heat foe my 500 sq foot shop works great. I leave it set at 60 and if it falls over it shuts off. I have had it for 2 years still working great. Got it from Target for $40.
 
I have a vent free gas heater that mounts to the wall. You can get blower fans for them to help move the heat around. They are safe to use in enclosed areas and you can get one to run off propane or natural gas.

Home Depot and Lowes are out of ALL heaters here. I got the LAST one at Costco. It is a heat "dish" of some kind. Seems to be working good.

Is this the heater that you are using? Lasko Tower Heater with Electric Control : Target

How does yours affect your electric bill??? My garage is also 500 sq ft and never gets below 42' when we have multiple days below or just above freezing but usually it's in the mid 50s in the garage so this may be enough as I just want to get it above 60'
 
I run a kerosene heater and it keeps the chill out at 20 degree temps outside.

No mines on a stand and swivels but same thing in a sense.

My grandfather had a small one of these years ago in South Dakota. He ran it in his shop at night when it was ultra-cold (like -20). It stank terrible of kerosene but holy heat batman!
 
I can't help but to think about my electric bill. IMO gas is the way to go.
 
I would install an overhead gas heater. I have one of these and it warms the shop up nicely. A great investment.
 
I use a stationary propane heater (100,000-200,000 BTU) it keeps my shop nice & toasty :) Only costs $15 for refill to

bar rescue had an electric lamp style heater that they used in one of their bar fix ups
 
For a shop you might look at convection heaters (with a fan preferably) it heats pretty evenly.
 
I would go electric for sure!!!! Where I live (Arkansas) gas is more expensive to heat with than electric! Go figure. Anyway - I sometimes use a small propane heater to get my 3 car garage up close to temp and then turn them off and use a 220V 5000W plug in heater that has a thermostat. Usually thats not needed unless its like now (20°F)....A little quartz tube heater 110V 800W keeps temp fine in an insulated garage. and you can spot heat where you are working. The problem with all the propane and gas heaters is they use up the oxygen. Then you end up with a bunch of carbon dioxide (not carbon monoxide) and I get a headache or get tired easier. Electric is the way to go man - it doesnt take that much. JMHO

To my knowledge yes, its burning off anything it releases so the only thing that's in the air is a small odor but nothing highly noticeable. I'll trade 30° for a small odor & 70° any day ;)
