Guys, any of you have extremely sensitive skin when shaving?

Well, funny story. I posted that I was thinking about it, and then my (frankly; crummy) electric razor quit working! Welp! All the motivation I need!

Here's what I bought to 'start' with.

Stand:
Amazon.com: Escali Deluxe Chrome Razor and Brush Stand: Health & Personal Care

Stypic Pencil:
Amazon.com: Clubman Pinaud Jumbo Styptic Pencil 1 Ounce: Health & Personal Care

Inexpensive Merkur Razor:
Amazon.com: Merkur Model 180 Long Handled Safety Razor: Health & Personal Care

Inexpensive 100% Badger Brush:
Amazon.com: Escali 100% Pure Badger Shaving Brush: Health & Personal Care

Blade sample pack:
Amazon.com: Double Edge Safety Razor Blade Variety Pack - 100 Blades!: Health & Personal Care

Shaving soap:
Amazon.com: Proraso Shaving Soap with Green Tea and Oat - Ultra Sensitive Skin 150ml/5.2oz: Health & Personal Care

And a shaving bowl:
Amazon.com: SimplyBeautiful Deluxe Chrome Shaving Bowl for Shaving Soap: Health & Personal Care

Spent less than the cost of replacing my electric razor (way less!), and no more expensive razor head replacements that don't do a very good job anyway!

Used it for the first time today. Very little irritation, and an ultra-close shave. I have a full beard but shave my neck up to a little below my jawline, and then shave off a few stragglers on my cheeks. I was a little concerned about how well this would work but it worked wonders. Allowed me to have a razor sharp (pun intended) 'beard line' and a baby soft neck!

Now I just wish somebody made some sort of a 'guide' so I could use it to trim my beard too. As it is now I use hair-cutting clippers with a #2 guide comb, about once every week or two.

As for what I bought? I suppose I could recommend all of it. I'm really impressed with the "Cheap" merkur razor. I suppose I'm not an expert enough on the subject to tell the difference, but it feels heavy in my hand, has a good grip, and is easy to use. The detailer in me is glad it's a three-piece, not a twist-to-open, because then I can easily take it apart and clean it when I'm done! The badger brush is nice and soft but it sheds bristles. Not sure if that's typical, but it was CHEAP. I can always get a better one in the future. But I don't yet know what I want from a brush, so when I know that, I'll invest in a good one! (Same with everything else I bought, until I know what it is I need or want, I'm gonna go with inexpensive, well-reviewed stuff!)

Didn't read all the responses, but I use the Aveno Men's shaving cream and after shave lotion. Also, after you are done shaving and wipe off the cream, rub cold water on your face. It closes up your pores and helps with irritation.

Best bet is to get a good pre shave oil. From experience, it will save your face! I would also get a good after shave lotion none of that crap that target or walmart sells. Get something of good quality that will cool the skin and add moisture to the possible areas of burn. Lastly, technique counts, go with the grain first than against. Oh one more thing, realize that those sample blades you have, while they look the same, some are much sharper than others. Use one of the duller ones until you get comfortable with technique and with your face

I use:

Art of Shaving pre shave oil
C.o. Bigelow Shave cream.
Art of Shaving Badger Brush
Merkur DE Razors
Art of Shaving after shave lotion

No complaints. Until I got the pre shave oil, I would get razor burn and feel sensitive too. Best of luck!

Excellent respones fellas!!!!!!!!!!!! :props: :dblthumb2: :xyxthumbs:

A place to get an excellent badger hair brush or knot to make your own is

Whipped Dog Straight Razor Shaving Equipment

Lots of really good supplies at very good prices.

I recommend a silvertip brush as it is the softest and builds the best lather of all the different qualities of badger brushes I have.

Here are two of my custom made brushes

Mmmmm silvertip, wish I didn't have the new detailing hobby.

The bottom of my neck was the worst. The hair came in, in 5 different directions, and no matter what I did I broke out, Bled and had a bunch of ingrown hairs. I went and got electrolysis. For years I've had a perfect beard line, and the best part, no more braking out. 10 years later, I might have to get it touched up.

Awesome!

Mine is working well too. Although I'm still not getting as close as I'd like. I can't go against or across the grain without it feeling like I'm pulling the hairs out, even after a couple 'with the grain' passes. I'm trying various other blades though. Any recommendations?

Using a shaving soap and brush is 1000x better than that canned goop; can't believe it! And I definitely enjoy the shave better than with an electric! It's great really!

Anyone have blade suggestions? So far my favorite is the blade that came with my Merkur razor.

Looks like a 34c, I like mine a lot. Good weight to it. Though I think I may get something with a longer handle and save my Merkur for traveling. Glad you enjoyed it, that's the best part about having it, enjoying your shave.

I'm thinking about going with a sharper blade too. Amazon has the swords, I think it was $18-$20 for a 100 pack.

This is the merkur as well and i am using the sample blade that came with it. I did pick up from Amazon a 100 blade count razors but i cannot remember the name. It was 100 blades for 10 bucks.

My skin is super smooth now, and i did get a close shave, but i do believe that my Proglide 5 blade was getting a closer shave. I do need more experience though so perhaps in a shave or two il be more used to it and not worry about cutting myself.

Exactly! Back in the day i didn't know about the details that i learned in this thread. Just awesome!

I agree about the closer shave with a pro glide, at least initially for me. However I have been using my double edge for a while and am able to go against the grain. It comes down to learning your face. Once I've made two to three passes with the grain I will re-lather and go against. That is unless I have neglected to shave for a few days... which is very often lately.

I invested in a Merkur 34C and some Personna blades. MUCH less irritation compared to the cartridge razors. I ordered Feather DE blades as I want something sharper. Used canned shaving cream. Not sure if a brush and bowl soap would work better?

I use an "all natural" cream. But my skin being a sensitive as it is was irritated with gels and most creams. I really like the brush method, I find cleaning it and prepping it are very minor offsets to how they perform vs. any other method. Cost has been very good to me, the cream lasts for ages and although up front it was more I am at a point where it has become extremely cheap to shave, even if I kept up every day.

What brand of all natural cream?

It's the cream from the art of shaving. I believe it it's rebranded from another company which I'm sure I could get for even cheaper. The travel container I have currently has lasted me since November. I believe they even sell it in department stores now, like Sears or JC Penny. Chances are I'll try another cream after it runs out, I like to switch it up and try new things.

Hi,

If you want, you can go and see "The Art of Shaving" website, they sell very nice products that will help you. They have stores in the big cities (I went to Boston and New York), you can also order online on Amazon.

They will explain how to shave properly, what to buy for your specific needs, etc.

You need clean your skin properly before you shave though, a lot of good products for that. Out from the shower, you do your stuff and you are good to go. :-)

The less blades you have, the better it is to shave. Only Mach 3 or even Sensor. Or you go to 1 blade, safety razor or the simple blade (barber).

Works all good!

I use Anthony's logistics . My job u need to be clean shaved. I could not shave more then 2 a week. I started using Anthony's shave kit and it makes a big dif.

My favorite blades are feather blades, sharpest and smoothest blade I've used.
