Earlier I read a thread where someone claimed that leather conditioner is a better tire dressing than dressing made specifically for tires. This was the view of a person who claimed that all high end car owners do not use tire dressing.

Now I just read another thread (I was Googling around), where someone claims that wax is bad for paint! Here is a quote:

"[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica]Doing full blown customs and exotic cars for dozens of years in my own shop, Ill say I NEVER wax my own street or show cars. I use only polish. If I had to park always in harsh environments like under trees or bird nests, I might use wax. I drive all my cars year round and most set outside, some with covers. To me the shine is in the paint job...anything you put over it is just a protectant. Just my opinion. You can put $100 a can wax on your car, but if its a $100 paint job it dont make any difference. Same if you have a $5000 paint job...it looks the same with or without any wax. One reason I dont like wax is it makes water bead. In clearcoat paintjobs, those drops if you dont wipe them off burn microscopic holes in the clearcoat, causing premature failure. Thats my last word on it here, if anyone disagrees, thats fine."

I have never heard such a view before. Comments?

I read that thread. A lotta nonsense there.

Although my favorite part about it is the guy making the statements has "Socialism" written across his avatar with some pic I think is supposed to be Obama.

Ok, then...

Lol what a moron... Wax is to paint as sunscreen is to skin... Scary thing is people like him exist and pride them self in their detailing abilities.

Every time it read a post where someone says wax is bad for paint, I think they're a vegan.

Some people are just too blind, and unteachable yeah everything in life has some kind of flaw or error but wax is not bad for the paint it's a sunscreen, and nourishment to the paintwork/metal

I remember reading something about Carnauba wax being slightly acidic and being able to deteriorate paint over long periods of time. It was on Dr. Beasley's blog and it was recommended the ol' sealant first-wax last process over just straight wax over your car.

"No, not a sealant...those are total snake oil."

Was it the same guy that was a 'pro detailer' in those videos detailing a Bentley, doing everything that you shouldn't do as a detailer? lol

You made me curious so I went to YouTube. It didn't take long to find "Bentley Detail Nightmare." It seems too serious to be parody, but if it is not parody, why is it titled detail nightmare?

The scary thing is that Pro-Clean is local to me. Tyson's Corner is one of the high-end shopping areas in the D.C metro area. His website looks good at first glance, but there are no photos at all. Hmm.Pro-Clean of Tysons Corner - Northern Virginia's Top Detailing Shop

There's a lot of idiots on the internet and are sadly gaining popularity. A detailer can make this claim, but knowing how PPG manufactures Clear and their systems, reading their application manuals. Wax will not harm paint or microscopically burn it causing failure. Lack of care over say a ten year period will cause failure. Also when paint burns, the clear doesn't fail. It clouds up, then turns brown and then flakes off with intense heat (1500F+). Not to mention this, but a majority of car manuals suggest waxing and sealing. Also just to add, fresh paint beads just like coated paint, this goes for polished paint too. Paradox

Haha I had never seen those videos before. I'm in Northern VA too btw. Lots of detailers in this area I have learned.

Maybe if the wax manufacturers followed the cosmetic industry and labeled their wares as cruelty free? "No Animal Testing" :xyxthumbs:

I just read a little bit of the posts. All I gotta say is I hope people on there listen to that guy. Which looks like he has some followers lol. Let all those tards eat it all up and stop waxing their cars/trucks. Hopefully it makes front page on the new York times. So the world stops taking care of their cars and trucks. Two years from now some of us mobile detailers will be doing enough paint corrections to make it to the Forbes 500 list lol god bless that idiot. He's doing great things. GREAT THINGS. lol

The guy does have some good points, but they just are not being communicated in the right way.

Yes, the wax/sealant/coating should only have a minimal effect on the overall appearance. The prep work should make the difference. He is correct about this.

Wax causes your paint to bead, which is also true for many sealants and coatings. It is true that under some rare occasions, the beading effect will allow water to remain on the surface for a while - and if the water is hard, this may cause etching. Perhaps this is what he means by "burn?"

Just curious. I've never had water spots left on my cars from wax beading. My daily driver just went through 2 months of snow and salt daily, and while the wax didn't seem to hold up well, not a single water spot.

However, I have had water spots from hose water. Unless you live someplace where the rain is corrosive for some environmental reason, there should be little or no minerals in rain water. And, we all know the primary culprit of water spotting is calcium salts.

That's crazy.

Some people do crazy things, but to them it's the right way and you'll never change their mind.

Many years back I knew this guy who worked in a body shop, his job was to paint cars.
One day I stopped by to get a quote for some car I had, forget the details but anyway he was washing his personal truck only using water, he held the tip of the hose against the paint and used a towel to clean the paint.
I asked him why he didn't use soap, he said soap , any soap is harsh on paint, I didn't reply back, I just told him I wanted him to look at my car.

You see in his mind he really felt soap was bad for paint but who am I to tell a professional painter he was washing his truck wrong.
One thing though, he was one of the best painters here in the area back then, everyone wanted him to paint their cars, that he was good at.

I suppose if you had a well-prepped waxed vehicle with a perfectly flat or fully concave surface and left it out in the rain and allowed that water to pool and it never dried up im sure it would take its toll.

Will that ever happen? Even rolling a well waxed car forces the beads into motion. He better be detailing an open roof car collection in Seattle if he's going to make that claim.
