Help with black trim

I'll check those brushes out.. Still adding stuff to my collection..

I have some Meguiar's protectant I'm gonna use.. I still have about 2 hrs worth to go.. :/

But it should be worth it in the end.. A happy wife... :)

Sitting overnight. First time I thought I had it cleaned it came back literally overnight..

My question/observation from my limited experience with this product is--is there still product on the surface? When I used it, the surface looked great like yours, but a little water and agitation from my fingers and the product residue washed off and the surface went back to dull gray (but clean).

I'm not sure if residue will interfere with dressing application. Either way, keep us posted. I mean, if you just go over it now with dressing and it stays looking good for a year, that's a darn good result.

The problem with a more permanent, coating-type restorer, which may stay looking good for 1-2 years, is what do you do then? I have had disappointing results re-applying C4 over surfaces that were previously coated.

Yea I guess I'll just have to be careful and lightly brush it then dress it accordingly.

Also, yes man, i've never heard that term, lol, but it sounds like it means hang out. Sounds good to me Setec.

Yeah, but at least it's clean, put some nice dressing or a restorer on there now, Wolfgang Exterior Trim Sealant (WETS) is a nice product, or CarPro DLux for something more permanent.

Wolfgang's works nice after cleaning it up with B2B trim cleaner. I just read on another threan that Mike P. recommends to keep applying WETS after every wash until the trim is restored. Once I read that I was pleased with using WETS.

If you are looking for something OTC to buy you time until you get something better then I would give meguiar's ultimate black a shot.
 
Is it possible that your trim is faded from the sun?

Possible, but it really don't look any worse than all the demos of the restoration products I've watched. Time will tell.

Ultimate black is on one of my test spots. ;)

One has a trio of ultimate compound followed by mothers trim restorer topped with ultimate black.

And one has all the above with a coating of ultimate protectant..

I only ask because it should come off. If it really is wax then it has not been removed fully yet and there is no reason to put a dressing or protectant on it yet.

I just removed some wax from my plastic trim last weekend. I used purple power but the product you used should have worked as well. Now I did have to scrub, rinse, dry and repeat a few times for each section but it all came off. You may even try wiping with a micro fiber after scrubbing with the brush. I think the brush agitates it but the towel picks it up as I could see it on my towel.

I'm still a noob but that's my experience with a similar issue.

I have the fading/white problem on my Benz . . . and my friend has it on his Mazda . . .

Conclusion: A mix of waxes, cleaners, sunlight, and oxidation have bleached the upper surface of the black trim permanently. (I'm talking about hard plastic trim)

Therefore, products can only cover up and mask the white color just like a wax temporarily masks some micro-marring.

I sanded the trim on my car with many different grits and it seemed to come out fine... although it took forever.

That's about what I've determined. It's faded, oxidized and all..

Mike's article on black trim nailed it. When your trim is new "find something you like and use it often"

I've still got a couple of things I'm going to try.. But the fixit products aren't made for the trim in this shape...

LA's Totally Awesome and a scrub brush I picked up at the Dollar Tree yesterday... Just
aggressive enough to cut the crap and clean the funk..

This pic was 24 hrs after test spot and no protection..

Not perfect but it's getting there...
