Newbie to polishing. I recently got SF 4000 and did a test spot. These are the following steps that I undertook...

1) Clean the area.
2) Dried it
3) Put the product on the Orange County power pad (Hand applicator). Spread the product on the area, but it felt a little dry.
4) Put on little more product.
5) Try to apply it on the surface area, it still felt a dry and was a little difficult to apply.
6) Sprayed water on the pad. Application become smooth and but product become soap like. :(
7) Continued the application process until the product start to become transparent, it also started to dry up.
8) It wasn't completely dry, but significantly dry. Wiped the area with clean towel.
9) Buffed it mirror shine. Topped it with wax.

Ok, I feel, I did something wrong here. What did I do wrong? Didn't prime the pad correctly?

My questions will be broad... hard to center on one path the identify root cause. You may have primed the pad properly. Soap-like isn't a huge deal IMO and it seems as if you ended up with the right results.

1. Did you perform this work outside? If yes, were you in direct sunlight? What color is the vehicle?
2. Is the power pad ever been used in the past?

Thanks for the reply.

1) I was indoors. It was Chrome panel. Since it was a bit hot, I did turn the fan on.
2) Pad was brand new. Used for the first time.

I think fan was culprit. :bash:

not sure you did anything wrong, if you got the result.

If I were you, I'd buy a DA machine though, harbor freight has an inexpensive one and with a 20% coupon makes it more than affordable.

Was the panel hot? Or just room temperature hot? Ive used SF4000 almost exclusively and never had a similar issue. Did you prime the pad first? I usually spritz a couple sprays of detail spray on the pad, then put 3 dime size drops on it and go to town. It never dries or dusts on me.

How large was the area you were polishing?

Did you do it in sections?

How larger was each section you worked?

When polishing by hand you should be working a 12"x12" area

It on my 'To Buy' list, but fortunately it is little down the order atm. :(

Panel was cool, specially after washing. Room temp was hot, thats why I turned the fan on. I live is hot country.

If you asking if I prime the pad like in this link...

No, I didn't prime the pad. I was working on a test spot and work area wasn't very big. I thought I would see a 'film' like surface after I'm done, but I didn't. So I think I did something wrong. I don't have any QDs, so I used water, but it became soap like and didn't even got close to film like.

I was testing a spot, so area wasn't very big. I will certainly be doing one section at a time.

If you got the results it seems like you didn't do anything wrong.

On a side note though, SF4000 really likes to be worked by machine and broken down to see significant results. Not saying anything bad, just typical of Menzerna prosucts.

You said it became translucent like it's supposed to. What kind of film were you expecting to see?

When you said you applied it to a chrome panel did you mean actual chrome or plastic that has chrome plating on it?

Not sure what 'actual chrome' mean here. It was metal with chrome finish.

I read this link before I purchased SF 4000. Mike himself said that Menzerna can be worked with hand application. Based on his word, I bought SF 4000. Its not going to be easy, no doubt about that. I think if I remember it correctly SF 4000 is DAT type polish and it takes a while to break down. It will be fun haha, workout like fun. :D
