Happy Thanksgiving my American friends. I need to replace my desktop computer which is at 95% capacity and running Windows Vista. I want to buy a new computer online on Thursday or Friday and take advantage of a BF sale. I will be at work and can't physically go into a store to purchase so I need a website that offers a great deal with (hopefully) free shipping. I have a new monitor, so I only need the tower. Can anyone point me in the right direction. US or Canadian sites, I don't care. TIA.

I am on dells alienware line of computers, I love them, but they might be a bit overkill for what you are doing

You have haves few options. Newegg has some great deals but customer service is not the best. If you are a Costco (www.costco.com) member, that is the way to go. Limited selection but I am sure you can find a CPU that will fit your needs. They have GREAT customer service, just like Autogeek, that is rare now a days.

I talked to a friend who builds/repairs computers on the side. I told him I wanted to build my own computer. So he made a list of stuff he suggested I should buy. Then he was going to teach me how to build one. That never happened, so my brother just built it for me. This is what I bought, so you might want to look into building a computer. Probably cheaper and you get to pick and choose what you want and don't want.

You can think of it as buying a kit Autogeek sells vs making your own starter kit.

I spent $492.95

Here is the stuff I bought.

alienware is geared a little more towards serious gamers I believe. Depending on your needs I would think something more like this.

HP ENVY Desktop Intel Core i5 12GB Memory 2TB Hard Drive 700-414 - Best Buy

Dave, that looks incredible. Even better than this other one that I had found with similar stats:

Lenovo K450E 57327391 Desktop PC Intel Core i7 4790 (3.6GHz) 12GB DDR3 2TB HDD Windows 8.1 64-bit - Newegg.com

I didn't even think of costco! I'll be looking there next...thanks!

And the needs are basic household. Downloading stuff, editing pics and videos, running programs. Nobody in the family is a gamer at all. I just want it to be fast and efficient.

You can also just rebuild your existing computer. So you don't have to buy stuff you already have. Like the tower, power supply, motherboard, internet connection. So the money you were going to spend, you can just use to build a turbo charged computer. Meaning, upgrading the inside.

I built my own computer from scratch, it is a 8-core 6ghz AMD.

The Alienware is way overpriced, and the Lenovo would treat you right and do anything you want it to do, go with that if you have to choose between the two.

Just fyi- I built my computer for a little over $1,200 USD. Any "computer guy" i tell the exact specifications they all state "wow you can run a little village off it!"

If you have someone to build one for you, go for it.

Depending on what your going for check out all the online electric retailers. Or if you want some extra beef go to a website like CyberPower PC.

7 years ago, I helped my 17-year-old son build his own computer from parts he researched.

Fast forward to early this year, my 2nd son (also now 17) went through the same process, this time he didn't need my help. He built it himself.

I say if you have the aptitude and attitude for it, just build it! All you need is a screwdriver and some Google & YouTube help.

Otherwise, I'd go with Dell. :)

I built my desktop and anyone can do it. I spent well over $1300 doing it. But to comment again on the original topic, I don't see why you need 12GB of RAM. If you can find 8GB then you'll be more than fine. RAM cost a lot more now a days compared to a few years ago.

Oh and my computer monitor is a flat screen 40 inch LCD lol.

Thinking about buying another 40 inch tv to combine them, but it's more of a want not a need.

A few months back I bought a Dell XPS 8700 and I am very happy with it. Plenty of power and speed and I use it for exactly what you want to use one for.

You don't want vista, you need Win7 but most pre-made computers are going to have win8 so you'll just have to deal with it unless you want to build your own (which I recommend).

if you prefer to build one, go to reddit.com/r/buildapc and ask for help - you tell them your budget, what you want to do with your pc and they'll help you. They're very helpful so don't be afraid to ask.

If you're going to get a pre-made PC, I suggest get a i3/i5 processor with at least 4-6GB of ram, it would be a bit expensive if video card is included but if you're going to play video game then that's a must if not then integrated (built-in) will do.

Websites would be amazon, newegg, tigerdirect
