DP Tire Coating vs Tuf Shine Tire Clearcoat

Hey guys how critical is it to use tufshine tire cleaner before applying the tufshine clear coat. I kinda cheaped out and got wolfgang tire and wheel cleaner instead so that I could continue to use it in the future. Can I make it work?

After reading more I see I should stay tuned for my answer.

Only thing that will do it is TS tire cleaner - believe me. It's formulated specifically for the task at hand - removing old dressings out of tires. Even so, it's a decent amount of work to clean all those old dressings out of tires.

WG T & W Cleaner is setting you up for TS failure.

how did your rear passenger tire hold up? Looks like I will be ordering it. Would have been just 10 more dollars..smh

It was my mom's car. The last time I looked the coatings seemed to be holding up well. I've been too busy lately do a close comparison but I will be doing an update soon.

I really don't expect to see much of a difference in the results (but I could be wrong) since the DP & TS tire cleaners are very similar, the same with the DP & TS tire coatings.

I misread. thought u didn't use ANYTHING on the RR passenger.

April 4, 2015 - 5 Week Update

Here is an update of approximately 5 weeks since TS Tire Clearcoat and DP Tire Coating were applied to the passenger side tires of this 2000 Toyota Camry with new Michelin tires.

TSTC was applied to half of each tire and DPTC was applied to the other half of each tire. Refer to post #15 of this same thread for more details.

The tires were washed about 3 times during the 5 weeks with car wash soap (Griot’s Garage Brilliant Finish Car Wash) and a black micro-chenille wash mitt.

Tires were scrubbed gently each time and then rinsed with water.

The following pictures were taken in the early afternoon with the sun almost directly overhead.

Here is the front passenger tire which has TS Tire Clearcoat on the left side and DP Tire Coating on the right side.

Observations

From a distance it's hard to tell the difference in the two coatings but when looking closely and in different angles of sunlight, it looks like the TSTC is holding up a little better than the DPTC after 5 weeks.

This review is great. Looking forward to another update.

So the tires should be washed between applications? Maybe I can restore some shine

With a coating on the tires, usually a light wash is all that's necessary to clean the tires and restore some of the initial shine.

What is the word on a second application? Will the tuff shine tire cleaner remove the TS coating?

I'm not sure that the TS Tire Cleaner will completely remove the existing coating, perhaps with several applications, good scrubbing with a stiff brush and some elbow grease.

To apply another coat of the tire coating, you simply clean the tire, dry and apply another coat. It's not necessary to completely remove the existing coating.

Been using TS Tire Cleaner and Clearcoat for 2 years now. Tuf Shine recommends mild soap and water only (after clearcoat has been done). I've used various auto washes like P21S, Meg #00, Griots, D114 RW, Dawn at mild dilution ratios with no issues. A terrific product to say the least. But, every spring, I do start all over and do a thorough cleaning and a fresh clearcoat on my own cars.

I didn't get good results. Also didn't wash them when I washed the paint.

May 24, 2015 - 12 Week Update (approximately 3 months)

Here is an update of approximately 12 weeks since TS Tire Clearcoat and DP Tire Coating were applied to the passenger side tires of this 2000 Toyota Camry with new Michelin tires.

TSTC was applied to half of each tire and DPTC was applied to the other half of each tire. Refer to post #15 & #25 of this same thread for more details.

The tires were washed gently with car wash soap (Griot’s Garage Brilliant Finish Car Wash) and a black micro-chenille wash mitt during the 3 months about every two weeks.

This is what the tires look like after about 3 months

Final Observations

It was hard to tell the difference between the two coatings from a distance but if you look real close I would give a very slight edge to Tuf Shine Tire Coating. You may be able to see it in some of the pictures.

You can also see that the tires still have coating though most of the original shine is gone.

Conclusion

Two more coats of the DP Tire Coating were applied on both tires

This will conclude this comparison between TSTC & DPTC. I hope it was helpful.

Thanks for taking the time to document and post your results Frank! :dblthumb2:

I'm always amazed at the way tire gels, tire dressings and tire coatings react differently from vehicle to vehicle. For this reason they are in my opinion, the most painstaking products to develop because there is virtually no consistency in the results due to the variations in rubber compounds used by tire manufacturers. X product might outlast Y product on one vehicle, and it will be the complete opposite on another.

Excellent work! :applause:

Nice review.

It seems the products are interchangeable. I believe the TS stuff is cheaper - so I'll stick with that.

One cool thing I've discovered about TS, is you can use the TS Tire Clear Coat and top it with TS Black Restore for a better look. These products actually can be layered - in a real sense. The Black Restore really leaves the tires BLACK.

Thanks Nick, I'm beginning to realize the same thing.

Thanks, I wasn't aware or never paid attention to TS Black Restore, I'll have to check it out.

Great review! As was mentioned in the final set of pics,You couldn't tell any difference in some of the pics. Only when closer could I tell any difference.

I would give the edge to the TS as well, but not by much. DP is no slouch though.

I too am amazed at how dressings react to different tires, and different vehicles. The tires on my beater HHR always clean and "shine up" really nice no matter what product. It has been that way with all three sets of tires I've put on it. The tires get dirtier than on my other vehicles that don't get driven as much, but I deep clean them just like I do on the HHR.
