Better than Rain-x?

I just bought Duragloss Rain Repel, and was very hopeful, as it had good reviews. Rain-x is a pain to apply, and just doesn't last that long.

I tried the Duragloss Rain Repel, and its convenient, being a glass cleaner. It does bead the rain, but it doesn't allow you to drive with the wipers wiping less: the water doesn't stream off the windshield at speed. After the 12 days of rain here in NC, I have reluctantly put Rain-X back on.

Anyone have other suggestions? I don't really want to get to high dollar glass coating, but if they outperform Rain-x and last much longer, I might consider it.

I started using 845 on glass. Going on 4 months on my windshield and my wife's. I don't use my wipers much and it still sheds water great, she uses her wipers a lot and I need to reapply on her windshield.

Once the seal is broken, you must use all of it.

And Aquapel doesn't go very far either. I did my windshield on my small Kia, and I think I did the two front side windows with "Vapor" that was left.

Second time I used it, I got some tips here, popped the applicator facing up, not down, spread it thinner, worked like DATA on Ster Trek, and then barely got the side windows too.

I wasn't impressed with Aquapel's performance or longevity either.

And the second time I used Aquapel, I went to the nines cleaning-prepping the glass beforehand. First clean with Invisible Glass, then Clayed, then used Pinnacle Cleaner-waterspot remover, then 91% Alcohol, then CP Eraser.

I didn't think the stuff lasted any longer than Rain-X IMO, both times. It's one product I'll never buy again, even if the applicators were 59 cents each.

I do the same, Collinite 845 or DG 105 on my windows.

Is that a single windshield per applicator, or can you somehow store it for additional applications?

You can do two out of one treatment, but you have to have all your ducks in a row. You have to work super fast.

Aquapel was my choice until the newer glass coatings came into play. I clean with DP's Glass Restorer and apply. Months and months of protection. Doesn't streak anywhere near Rain-X and wipers don't chatter.

Auto Glass:
Glass is something I have always paid a lot of attention to in regards to detailing specifically.
I also happen to be in the middle of an extensive research project regarding auto glass cleaner specifically.

Ironically, the last two products I tested were original Rain-X and Rain-X Rain Repellent.
I am also in NC and have experienced the same 12 straight days of rain.

Rain X Original:

- By far the worst glass cleaner of any kind I have ever used.
- This product is horrible.
- I would describe this product as cleaning with tap water mixed with clear hand soap.
- Very Runny.
- Takes forever to buff in.
- Takes forever to dry.
- Leaves the glass smeary to a critical eye.
- The scent is ok but reminds me of wet rubber floor mats.
- Hated this product before I even finished cleaning all the glass. Was counting down the minutes until my experience with Rain-X original was over.
- Acid Rain with Tap Water can clean glass better than this product.
- Not sure how this product even has a market of consumers.
- Would not recommend.
- Will never buy again.
- Would not use this product if it was given to me free.
- Even the directions are hilarious.
(Only use with Dry Paper Towel and 100% cotton cloth).
- Horrible multi- surface cleaner.

Rain-X Rain Repellent.

- Good product.
- Remarkably better than the original.
- A bit runny, but not too bad.
- Does take a long time to work into the glass.
- Does take a long time to dry.
- Scent of a light solvent
- Very nice clarity when finally ready.
- Recommend this product.
- Not designed for multi-surface cleaning.

Recommendation:
Armor All Auto Glass.

To date, this is definitively the best auto glass cleaner I have ever used.
- Cleans great, best glass cleaner I have used for cleaning specifically, not just finishing.
- Dries fast.
- Not runny.
- Great visibility and clarity looking through the glass.
- Showroom reflection
- Showroom shine.
- Fantastic Scent (I refer to it as an Executive Scent).
- Outstanding multi surface cleaner.
- Outstanding for interior electronics and dash.
- Super cheap: $2.80 /bottle at Wal-Mart.
- Not stated to be hydrophobic, but I have never seen a glass cleaner perform this well in the rain, and then look brand new after the rain has stopped and the glass has dried.
- Highly recommend this product.

Last time I replaced my wife's wiper blades i put Rain X brand blades on. They state that they apply the rain repellant treatment. I thought it was BS. I do use rain x quite often on my DD but my wifes does not get as much attention because it's in the garage. We took her car on a trip recently and I will say that these blades do seem to re apply the treatment as water still beaded like crazy even months after my last application of rain x

You've shown no "original rain-x" in this post.

You've shown no "original rain-x" in this post.

Ok.
That is correct.
Did not realize just how many Rain-X glass cleaning products exist.
My focus is on glass cleaners, not regimes, treatments, or systems.
This is why the flag did not show up in my initial research for the Rain X glass cleaners specifically.

The Rain-X that I identified as Rain-X Original is actually just identified as Rain-X Glass Cleaner.
There is a separate Rain-X product labeled Rain-X Original Glass Water Repellent Treatment.
Not specifically a glass cleaner.

It appears the Rain-X Treatment existed before the actual Rain-X Glass Cleaner/Cleaners.

I agree with you on a glass coating. I use DP's glass restorer as well. I have been impressed with DP Glass Coating. Lives up to it's claims for me personally.

Interesting, as it was a toss up between Duragloss #751 and the DP Glass Restorer when I last purchased from AG. I got Duragloss because it was cheaper. Oh well. Have you tried DG?

Thanks for that, but none of those are the RainX I have been using, well, forever. It's more like a container of lighter fluid.

I have been a big fan of Stoners Invisible Glass for cleaning glass, as it gets rid of plastic hazing on the inside of the windshield like nothing I have ever tried. They make a combo with repellant too, but have not tried it either.

I just finished an 8 hour job on the windshield of my old car that my daughter drives, using Ceriglass, Duragloss NuGlass, clay and Stoners. The Ceriglass got rid of 95% of the wiper trails, after which I gave up. The windshield is 14 yrs old so has lots of pock marks, stone chips etc. so not worth a 100% job. Anyway, it's as clean as it's ever going to get.

I too have found Rain-X to be my "go to" "coating" IF I bother to use one. Those coatings that I've tried have proven to be more trouble than they're worth plus the additional cost when all I have to do is turn on a wiper switch. If my blades start to chatter, I just replace my blades with OEM blades. No issues, no extra work, no extra expense. All for $30 yr.
IF there were no wipers and we HAD to use a coating, people would be complaining like crazy..... JMO so no flaming please.
