Flex XCE 9-8 150

while it runs a little cooler (haven't had a problem with my 3401 running hot), is a little quieter with a different top/head, i'm not sure if it's worth upgrading. may not be that much of a difference for those who have 3401 that aren't having any problems with it...

3401 looks like the more solidly built machine. The XCE looks like a cost cutting venture, less robust. I honestly think the 3401 is still going to be sold as the top dog with the other models falling under it.

Why? Cause of the plastic over metal gear housing??? Rotex 150 has a plastic housing... granted better than flex plastics and a lot better than rupes, but what Is inside that housing is mind blowing. Makes the 3401 look like a childs toy. Therefore, that is not a valid reason to think that it is less of tool.

Those are just not very good assumptions and that's definitely not how it's being position by Flex or how it felt in my experience. The improvements aren't compelling enough to warrant people rushing out there to replace their 3401, but the XCE is very clearly the "better" of the two. Again, the only reason they are keeping the 3401 around is legacy reasons. When I point blank asked which one new buyer should buy, they answered, without a doubt, the XCE. It's an extremely solid machine.

My 3401 never used to run hot and it has been terribly this last year. I sent it away for repair on another issue and then it started to run hot. I'll be sending it away again for repair, but I don't want to rely on it any longer. I also miss using it. I'll be getting the new model for sure and will relegate the old one to stand-by status. I'm looking very forward to playing with the new one! Thanks for the information in this thread.

Why is better cooling such a big deal? I use a flex 3401 at work and the heat doesn't bother me, does it have an effect on the finished product?

It's just a revised, better design. There's nothing wrong with the 3401. If you have a 3401, there's no reason to upgrade. If you're in the market for a new one, grab the XCE.

That's absolutely right. If u buy a new flex, buy the new one..it is incrementally better. Is it enough to make u upgrade an existing machine? No.

Rupes is dominating the headlines with their innovations. Flex needed to have press releases so they came up with a moderate update.

Yea but is the heat a problem? Will it affect the finished product? I am looking to start detailing on the in my free time and need my own buffer so idk if I should wait for the XCE or pick up the pink 3401 on sale. I use a 3401 everyday at work so unless the cooler, plastic head is going to benefit me in some way I think the $299 price tag is worth it.

The heat, in my opinion, is not a problem. If you need something now, that price on the limited edition 3401 is extremely tempting. I would get that if you have a need for something right now. It's an excellent machine.

I was going to wait for the XCE, but once I saw the $299 price tag, plus an additional 10% off, plus free shipping, it was a no brainier. I couldn't care less that it's pink. This is a steal at $269.99 shipped to my door.

What code got you the 10% off. The BF2015 doesn't seem to change the price.

"autopia"

It's been good for many years.

Code isn't working for the limited edition but its still a good price.... Oh well
