McKee's 37 Product Expert Here!

So let's talk about what's missing. XMT #4 ...the Rocks-in-a-bottle product that Mike so often called it.

I never got to use any of this. I have heard it was great on gel-coat especially, and that's what I wanted to try it out on. I heard it cut hard and fast with a long working time too. IDK! So, what's my alternative, or what would you recommend even if not from this line-up? I heard, and you know how that can be...LOL...that #4 was like 3M SD. What say you? A lot of people like 3M SD for rough gel work as a first step to additional steps...while a lot choose and swear by one-steps like M67 and 3M Marine Compound and Finishing Material...then of course, there's new compounds and one-steps in the Marine31 line I've yet to use.

XMT 4 has gobs of cutting power. I use it when a very neglected vehicle needs to be done, and always have to follow up with something milder when polishing down. I have about 3 bottles left but also find that Griot's fast correcting cream has just as much bite but finishes down better and has much greater working time.

If extra cut is what you need for a gel coat, look no further than Marine 31 Gel Coat Heavy Cut Oxidation Cleaner. This product works far better than XMT #4 while still being very user friendly.

XMT #4 was discontinued with the transition to McKee's 37 because abrasive technology has come such a long way since then. McKee's 37 Fast Compound is capable of tacking 99.9% of paint correction needs, and it finishes down considerably better than XMT #4.

Nick, I understand all that and thank you for the response.

I was more pointing out that XMT #4 and 3M SD were likely to two of the hardest cutting compounds offered by Autogeek even though they're not necessarily user friendly and don't finish well. I know it's not often a person needs that much cut, but quite honestly forum members and AG staff forum members always seemed to mention that in the past that M105 and 3MPerfect-It EX are about as stout as you can get for paint and still...as you eluded to...finish down well. That said, I've not done much detailing compared to a lot of others here, but I've had no less than 2 jobs where if I hadn't had SD on hand I'd have been in trouble. Especially on hard non-metallic black GM paint around door handles. I used the 2 above products by hand as well as with LC orange CCS pads on a rotary and still had to resort to 3M Super Duty because I didn't have any small wool pads at the time. Quite honestly the 3M SD was as persnickety as some would make it out to be. It cut the job with ease actually, making refining with 105 or EX much easier...a breeze really. It was one of those moments you'd have just had to have been there because I was like DUH!...why did I waste all that time wondering why the products that should have worked, in fact didn't. Again, this was on GM paint not gel-coat. I only mentioned gel-coat because I know Mike had recommended #4 on tough gel jobs long before the Marine31 line. In fact, I don't think I ever recall seeing him recommend it on paint.

Anyway, I was asking because now I'm down to just 3M SD as a choice for tough paint and liked having the option of xmt #4. Of course, I realize low sales and old abrasive technology changes things. Still, a product like 3M SD has gotten me out of a jam more than once by having it on hand. In fact, I'd almost rather use it than M105 at times...and I've noticed that if I do have to use the SD first, then 105 isn't nearly as sticky/gummy/concrete hard as it can often get. You guys are spoiled...LOL...working on nice paint all the time...or maybe I'm cursed. LOL!!!

I guess as far as total amount of cut is concerned XMT#4 was a stand out product in the XMT line even over and above some heavy hitters in more well known and popular brands.

In my cases, when needing more cut, sanding only in small areas at the time didn't seem like a viable option. Of course, should I need a product that cuts that hard, and if I have larger areas to work with that need that much cut, I'd probably just think about sanding then using my go-to products or something like McKees Fast Compound to refine it. Then again, I'd probably be better off passing the blessing to someone else. LOL!

One other thing, was it true that xmt#4, though considered rocks-n-a-bottle, had a long working time? I find 3M SD does. I honestly haven't found even a modern 3M compound that can rival SD...if cut alone is all you're comparing.

So, Marine31 Heavy Cut for gel, then what for paint if sanding isn't an option and M105 and Perfect-It EX aren't cutting the mustard so-to-speak without resorting to a rotary and wool?

My apology for sort of getting off of the McKee's brand, but it's sort of relevant considering 2 product lines were merged.

Thanks for the feedback! I think you'll like Menzerna Super Heavy Cut Compound...It won't cut as FAST as the 3M SD, but after a few passes it will start to "bite" and take out heavy defects.

Hi Doug,

Brand spankin' new formula, and you're going to love it. :dblthumb2:

I kinda know the answer, but I want to hear it from Nick...

Comparing Wolfgang Uber Compound to Mckee's Fast Cut, which is more aggressive and which finishes better? I have a dark colored car this weekend to do and it needs a compound for sure. I have had good results with Uber not needing followup with a polish for near perfect results.

hey nick, ive slowly been adding more and more M37 to my arsenal, after my last few cars im running low on M105 and M205. true to form this page has me wondering what else is out there for me to play with, so I thought id ask you what products in the M37 line would be direct or superior competitors to 105 and 205?

Isn't that what this whole internet thing is about...asking questions that you already know the answer to just to test someone's knowledge? :)

It's all in the abrasive technology. Wolfgang will work better on ceramic clear coat; McKee's 37 is slightly easier to work with. Plus, always use the "least aggressive approach" to get the job done.

McKee's 37 Fast Compound and Fast Polish. You will be VERY pleased with both. :)

Hard paint with heavy swirls?

Yes.

How is it that the Iron Remover works so well without it smelling like a perm kit from the 70's? I love this product and was just curious about this.

Ive never used Megs conditioning cream so I cannot comment on comparison, but when it comes to wipe off, with 360 there is virtually nothing left to wipe off. The product gets worked until it disappears, and whatever residue is left wipes off effortlessly!

Hey Nick,

I just noticed something so I wanted to ask you about it: Since McKee's 37 High Gloss Detail spray is a spanking new formula, why do the product reviews on its webpage go back to 2007? Shouldn't the reviews start when the product is released? I don't mean to be difficult, but it makes me wonder how much I can rely on the reviews...

Thanks again,
Doug

nick,

whats a good booster for m37 paint coating? ive been using PBL but im starting to notice it is leaving halo looking marks on the mckees side of my car but no marks at all on the PBL coating side. so just wanted to see if there is a mckees coating specific booster or if you have seen/had any luck with any other boosters.

Thanks for pointing that out Doug. The old page was re-used, so some of the content came with it.

McKee's 37 High Gloss Detail Spray works very well as a maintenance product for McKee's 37 Paint Coating.
