Sad news today

Sorry to hear that news, Paul. One of, if not THE, saddest thing for us as a family was having to put an ailing dog down last year.

Sorry to hear.. I had to put down our German Shepard last year. Worst part was I went in to the vet because he was feeling weak. Figured he has a cold or something. Walked out of the vet without him and had a feeling of what just happened.

Ended up being he had a tumor on his intestines that burst and was bleeding internally badly. Doc said there was nothing I could do and that he was in pain bad. Had him put down and he died in my arms.

I feel your pain.. I waited a year before I got another dog. I wish I got my new dog sooner. It helped greatly.

Sorry to hear this, Paul. Let's be realistic, and I think you have been by saying you would be putting her through extensive and expensive surgery more for you than for her. I think that's a fair statement on your part. There's a simple fact that remains, and you said it yourself, "we outlive them". That's as simple as it gets.

I once bought a yellow lab pup. Within 4 days of her being home with us I noticed some things and I watched them for a few days more as they worsened. Long story short, I spent an additional $1500.00 on surgery and the pup passed at 9-10 weeks old, having her less than two weeks. I could have bought 3 more pups for that, or splurged and bought a highly bred field trial lab pup. It was rough to say the least even only having the pup for about 2 weeks. I don't care if people spend the kind of money you mentioned if they have it and wish to spend it, but they still don't live forever.

I've decided that I will take things as they come, deal with them the best I can, keep the animal comfortable, grieve, and move on. I've also decided to put something else into action that I've done on 3 occasions now and I truly think it helps with the grieving process...something a dear late friend, mentor, and fellow retriever trainer shared with me. "The best way to get through the grieving process of losing a dog is to get another pup as soon as possible". I took this advice and I can humbly say that it has helped me and my family on more than one occasion. I've also watched my 87 year old father-in-law grieve less after losing his lab because our lab stays with him during the daytime. He even said that the lab staying with him during the day is like him getting another dog. In this case, our dog has a friend to be with during the day and my father-in-law has a dog to keep him company too. It's a win, win.

I know it's your dog, your money. However, just think of how that money could buy you more happiness by getting another dog or two, maybe even helping someone in need with that money, or purchasing a few dogs for children, helping some person in need by helping them buy a therapy dog, seeing-eye dog, etc.

Losing an animal is never easy, especially when you are the kind of owner willing to do whatever it takes and the means to do it. I know you'll be at ease with whatever decision you make, and that's what counts most.

While I was typing this I read Jomax's post, and he proves my mentor's point. Get another dog soon and move on. I've had 3 die in my arms while crying like a 3 year old. It's rough, man! Thoughts and prayers to you and yours.

The older of our two greyhounds, Lizzy was diagnosed with osteosarcoma today. A very aggressive bone cancer.

She just turned 11 last week.

I feel your pain Paul. The wife and I have rescued APBT's since we were dating (about 22 years). I'm sure you are the same with your majestic greyhounds.

The joy that comes with the companionship, funny little quirks each dog has, and just the blind loyalty that canines possess is, to me, irreplaceable.

Our oldest Pit, Koa is 14 and a cancer survivor (for now). Just wanted to chime in and give you some support buddy. :)

Sorry to hear that. People who do not own dogs do not understand how they are a member of the family, not just a pet.

sorry to hear this bad news paul 1 had to put 2 dogs down in 6 months 1 16 years old 1 14 years old

thank you everyone for your kind words.

I think you have been by saying you would be putting her through extensive and expensive surgery

No, I mentioned that was the only option offered by doctors. We will not put Lizzy through that. More X-Rays, since this post, shows it has spread quickly

Latest Update:
Right now, she's up, walking, eating, enjoying the ground sirloin steak I make for her, along with ice-cream, peanut butter and pain meds and, she's resting comfortably.
Her past injuries in her hind legs due to greyhound racing, have pretty much made it no choice. Amputating the front left will mean load baring on the back legs, which she can't do, and would be pointless since it has already spread. We can't put her through that just to make ourselves feel better.

We have given Lizzy a full and wonderful life, with lots greyhound adventures, other grey friends, great food and amazing medical car. We adopted her knowing about her racing injuries and spared no expenses, both in time and money to get her back to health. But now, the best thing we can do is know what we did for her and moving forward there just isn't a cure. Which is why I posted the link in an above post.

RE: About getting another dog, we adopt greyhounds. It's what we do. We love them all! If I had a big house, we've joked about having 10 LOL... 2 is the max capacity here at LSN Auto Detailing.

We have another younger Grey, Khaki. She'll be 6 yrs old in September. For a while after Lizzy passes, we're not going to rush out and adopt, rather, have some one-on-one time which Khaki, recoup on the financial front (vet bills thus far...) and when the time is right, we'll go visit our dear friend Marilyn at Greyhound Adoption Services in Salisbury Ma.

Our dogs are our family, our kids... We spoil them, they're good to us and they've opened our hearts. They're a big part of our lives...
Thank you everyone, especially those that have shared your stories of your dogs. They're special to us all...

I'll update this post when the time comes... :(

Sorry about the updated news Paul,

We thought we almost lost our sheepdog today, I came home from work and found she had eaten nearly a whole box (100 pcs) of NICORETTE gum. We don't know for sure how much gum she actually swallowed as all I found (at first) was heavily chewed foil packs with most of the gum still in it (I later found where she had vomited up about 7 pcs w/foil wrapper).

We called the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center ((888) 426-4435 There is a $65 fee b/c they have no outside funding We didn't care about the fee) who told us that it wasn't the nicotine that we had to worry about so much as it was the (I think sweetener - fake sugar) ingredient. This was at 0800 hours so they gave us the information they had and advised we take her to our vet for observation and blood/liver enzyme monitoring.

I guess this stuff can make a dog's blood sugar crash and it REALLY affects the liver function - enough to be fatal if enough gum is eaten and swallowed (I'm pretty sure the vet also said that ANY gum could do this). So I took her to our vet and dropped her off - It broke my heart because I swear after sitting in there for over an hour and a half (they determined she was stable and could wait a bit) when I got up, I swear she looked me directly in the eyes and got excited, with a look like "We're going home now right?" I had to fight back the tears b/c the last time I left a dog at the vet, he didn't come home (Spock).

12 hours later we get a phone call saying her blood work is good and we can pick her up. They told us just to watch for any unusual behavior and call if we had any more questions. Mopsy was a spastic moron jumping around the inside of the Explorer like usual on the way home.

It's 0340 am now and I just let her in from going outside. She seems a tad more "mellow" (I don't want to say 'lethargic' it sounds bad - mellow is a better descriptor as to how she's acting) and she was kind of quiet this evening, but that could be 1) All the nicotine she was exposed to, 2) The trauma of being at the vet's all day getting poked & prodded (she doesn't like the vet's office), or 3) it could be the fact that it's 90*+ and very humid. AND we don't have A/C in the house. I think it's probably a combination of all three.

Right now she's laying in bed with the wife in front of the fan we have in there ... blocking all the air from getting to us ... LOL

thank you everyone for your kind words.

Wow. That was like reading something that I wrote myself.

I really admire you, Paul. My wife and I are (as I mentioned above) are Pit bull rescuers. She works at a vet, and always comments on how awesome Greyhounds are. And the people who dedicate their lives to rescuing any breed, or any dog for that matter, are a special kind of people.

We have experienced 4 passings of our "kids", and it hurts a great deal. Each one will be remembered for their unique personalities, and (ahem) talents (good or bad) Lol

But, when a new addition comes, the joy of discovery starts all over again. The way they learn to manipulate either my wife or I for different things that the other one might not allow is actually eerie. Lol

I'll be thinking of you guys, Paul. :)

Sorry to hear about your beloved dog...we lost our Sheltie named Shalom in February. He would have turned 15 in May.

Sorry to hear that, two years ago I lost my African Grey due to a trauma she suffered when she fell down while she was inside her cage. She was just a year old

Sorry to hear of your loss. It's always hard on us when we lose one of our pets after years of fun and years of loyalty.

I had to put my Boxer Crabait down at the age of 13 due to cancer. I obtained her the week I was released out of the hospital after losing my right leg in a boating accident. She was with me wherever I went for the next 13 years including hundreds if not thousands of body shops, new and used car dealerships and detail shops when I covered Oregon, Washington and Idaho as a Trainer for Meguiar's.

Here's a picture of her on the bow of my Sanger Dragboat when she was about 2 years old. I think I was 28 in this picture.

I held her as the Vet put her to sleep... one of the hardest, most emotional losses of my life...

Hang in there...

Thank you for sharing that Mike. Dogs can help us through tough times, as mine certainly have.

As far as an update, Lizzy is still with us and is one tough gal. She still enjoys going on long walks, even pulls me in the direction of the long-walk route vs. the short rout.
She's eating well, and responsive to the pain meds... Her breathing is getting a bit more labored, I guess she'll tell us when it's time.

Here is Lizzy snoozing in her downstairs apartment (since she can no longer go up stairs).

paul_g, i'm sorry for your loss. rest assured, she's not suffering anymore and the final moments you and your family were with her, and that she will remember...

sorry to hear of the passing of what looks to have been a very loyal and well cared for friend. My wife and I have had 3 Boxers over the years, all 3 pass of cancer. our last over 1 year ago at only age 6. very very young. the pain of the loss is never easy. we've since now moved away from boxers for the next-round only because my heart couldn't take it just yet. we love our current two pets though and are looking to enjoy a lot more years of good times with them. I do foresee a boxer in our near future though.
