Question Subaru WRX Paint

Hey guys,

I have a potential customer for a detail for his Subaru WRX. Anything I need to know about Subaru paint. I plan on using HD Speed and maybe Adapt on it in some places.

The customer mentioned something about the paint being soft.
 
Don't sneeze by it or look at it wrong - it might scratch or swirl. The paint Subaru uses is one of the only things holding me back from buying another one again.
 
2 words, test spot. Also use very nice towels. Who knows nowadays what paint is like until you have it in front of you? Porsche used to be so soft if you looked at it you scratched it! Now some of them are rock hard. Start easy and go from there.
 
I planned on using my Flex 3401 and orange cutting pad. Should I not use it. I also have a porter cable 7424
 
Agreed on the test spot. You'd just never know from color to color (I'm looking at you, Acura).

Which model year? Seems like the newer ones are much, much better than the older gens. Did a friend's '14 XV and it cleaned up quickly with just M205 & PC.
 
I certainly wouldn't start with that flex and a cutting pad? Wait till you see the car before you decide.
 
Have a back up to HD speed. In my experience it tends to stick to Subaru paint.
 
I did a blue STi Hatch and it was fine. Did it with HDSpeed and Green Hex Pads on my Flex 3401.

The paint is soft and corrects very very easily. He's my neighbor and is looking to a coating before winter as two coats should help it from scratching and swirly so easily.

Sounds like a green pad and porter cable 7424 with HD Speed would be a good place too start

Yep. Depending on the color, just prep the owner that Subi bumper covers often don't match the body in terms of color or metallic flake content. Most cars differ a slight bit but Subi's can be noticeably different. Something just to be aware of if the car is dirty and the reveal could shock them.

Have a black 2016 WRX. Seeing how easily it scratched & swirled got me into this whole detailing 'thing'. WG Uber Ceramic + Gyeon Cure has protected it nicely. The WG 'Twins' took care of the defects it was delivered with.
 
I helped my brother polish his 2016 WRX and the paint was really soft. There was some light scratches and swirls and they came out with Menzerna 4500 and a white polishing pad.

Great suggestion! I just bought a 2017 Outback and my mirrors and rear spoiler are VERY different in color. Almost to the point I was ready to take it back until I looked on the dealer lot and noticed all were the same as mine.
@OP I used m205 with white pad and my 3401 da and it turned out awesome. Albeit a new car the paint was decent to start.
 
I've corrected about half a dozen Subarus over the years and they have all had soft paint, requiring nothing more than Menzerna SF4000 and a finishing or polishing pad to correct.

They also don't like heat very much either and the paint tends to get a bit sticky if overworked.
