Just what the economy needed

GM is broke due to bad management. Not Japanese/German cars.

Look at Goldman. They hedged their bets on the "high risk" mortgages over the past 4 years. Their stock jumped $12 in one day on their earnings report going into Q4 07. Thats management, risk with protection. Do you think the C-level management of Goldman got paid more than the C-level management of GM? I dont....its public knowledge.

NYC on the other hand is FILLED with foreign investors. I bought my place from a Saudi Citizen. I am one of the few owners actually living in my building. That is a negative stimulant on the dollar.

I stand behind UAW 100%...Most people who Bock at unionism are the desk workers..not the back bone workers of America....Look at the Miners...produce pickers....construction workers..the list goes on....they built this country under slave conditions...then the unions formed to give them safer working conditions...health benefits for thier families ..retirement annuities ....and most unions were started by Immigrants....since they were the ones that got the pits of hell jobs....sweat shops....miners....and so on....

I work as a mechanic for the Post Office...you think I want to slave over a truck all day for 7.25 a hour...when you bring your car to be serviced...is their labor rate 7.95..no..its more like 79.00 per hour and up...the mechanic probally makes 20.00 of that....maybe...

Get out from behind a desk and work for Wal Mart or some scab construction company hot topping a road for 7.25 and no medical or retirement .....

Sorry this is a very touchy subject for me..its like religion or politics...

AL

Tough one. But adds to my point. Sorry to hear the cut up of your efforts. Its good people that make the USA.

I stand strong for the UAW or any Union members for that matter...This country was built on the backs of slave wages...no offense but some of these comments sound like there coming from white collar workers and self employed business owners...02

With a name like Joe P, I have to guess you are Italian American...

Do you know what a GUINEA is? A Guinea was a form of currency. When the Dutch needed physical labor, they went to the markets and bought GUINEAS, which meant 1 GUINEA of pay per day. Each Italian was paid 1 guinea per day for their labor. Slaves, simply put.

Now tell me to shove my education up my arse......

Oh - I'm Italian American, from Genoa.

Maybe.. .do you think the Unions are the onlys with there hands in the pockets of big companies..

i like going to work with out the worry when a company crys broke that cant pull out a pencil along with a list names and start cutting jobs..plenty of fat to cut at the top first..

Maybe GM is broke due the fact that the people who are born and raised here in america chose to purchase foreign cars rather then buy American..people chose to work in America but send there monies back to other countrys...don't blame unions for the economy

No, I don't think the unions are the only ones, that's my point, there are no "bad" guys and "good" guys - it's everyone looking after themselves on BOTH sides, so I don't understand why some people want to put white hats on the unions... put a gray hat on everyone and then look at the ISSUES.

I like going to work and knowing that I provide a geniune return on investment to my employer... I'm not worried about being "trimmed" because I know I'm not the "fat"

Why do you think people choose to buy foreign? Because they hate America? Because they hate auto workers? Get real, individuals, like unions and companies are wanting what's best for them.

To everyone on AGO:

Personal opinions and politics aside, I just wanted to stop and say that I have a great deal of respect for everyone on this board. The hard work that goes into detailing, whether it's as a business or on your own vehicles goes a long way in my mind to proving that there are good hard working people to be found in all areas of life. Bottom line in my book, if you're happy doing what your doing and it benefits society and isn't immoral or illegal, be happy and be proud because THAT is what makes America, and every where else where people are free to look for "their place" great. If you're not happy with what you do and you're lucky enough to live in one of those places, change it, the only thing stopping you is you. My best wishes go out to BOTH the unionized workers and the thousands of non-union employees to GM and hope that both sides can reach an agreement quickly.

btw,Genoa is Salami Correct?? shove that

Spoken just like a suppressed union member.....

I should have known when you mentioned the use of a "pencil" in your previous post that you would have nothing of any value to add. Literacy is a fundamental key in understanding the business models that run your life.

Nice debate, go union!!!

BTW A.H. - Genoa is a type of salami that comes from Genoa Italy.

Good idea for the GREY hat. See both sides and form an EDUCATED opinion. It only hurts to speak from ignorance.

jsatek, I'm glad you agree but I have to say that I find many of your comments to be off the point and down right rude - I know some extremely intelligent people that never finished high school and some people that I don't think have enough sense to be allowed to operate a motor vehicle with ivy league educations. Read over some of Joe P.'s posts before you start questioning his intelligence, he's one of the most respected members on this board and while I may disagree with him on this and probably many other topics I would never presume to think that I'm any more intelligent. Lose the personal insults and stick the ISSUES and people will be more inclined to listen.

I wish someone would close this thread.

This is a fantastic thread, learning quite a bit here and interesting to read everyone's sides on the issue.

If I were you guys, I'd get it in now. Because by morning, this thread will be closed.

No, you're too right since it's almost midnight. I really must stop checking AG before after 11pm, you always spend at least 45 minutes catching up on posts!

Good night everyone...

I would like to add that I'm President of Local #297 Laborers Union of North America. Let me add that 83% of the Laborers that retire from the union have a disability from the hard work that they do. The factory workers also work under hard conditions. Yes it's true that many manufactures are moving out of the country in search of cheap labor. Soon the whole country will be working under Walmart conditions part time, cheap pay, no benefits, no retirement. the housing market is already suffering the last 6 straight month's and will continue to do so. The American dream is slowly being taken away from many Americans. The credit card debit in this country is at an all time high. People are losing there houses. People are going without insurance.
$8.00 an hour and $10.00 dollar an hour jobs aren't going to help anyone.

You man struck first, it just happened to be against a bigger and smarter dog. Thats not my problem. He struck against education, which is something I value, just like he values his UAW beliefs.

I offered him the opportunity to debate my thoughts. He didn't. He took the insult route, which clearly demonstrates ignorance. A strong belief with out backing. I would give him a little respect if he was wise enough to even Google an answer.

DO you all know that the strike is over. And guess who profited, WALL ST!

Nothing is ever a black and white issue. It's ok to disagree in a respectful way. Personal attacks serve no useful purpose and never help get one's point across. In the end I think we would all like to see the American car companies get back on their feet and keep jobs in the US.

Maybe someone can explain Union Dues to me?

You are sold as labor to a "choked: company.
You are paid hourly and at about a third of the rate you are billed at.
You pay a POST tax "VIG" to a union hall.

To do what for you?
Fire you when things get too costly?
Make you strike to get some fictional benefit?
Offer no job for you to jump to if necessary?

B-fund, you already earned it.....
your lack of knowledge on how the unions are run is exactly what i was talking about..i guess i'll put in qoutes for you again...

Fire you when things get too costly?
i told you once already Unions don't fire people

Make you strike to get some fictional benefit?
Unions don't make you strike..Members vote as to strike or not

Offer no job for you to jump to if necessary?
If the Hall is a hiring hall and work is available..the hall will put you work as long as your in good standings and your dues are current..

As offered the union and GM are back at table and strike has ended ... lets all remember to keep personal threats, comments aside and have an intelligent conversation from all sides of the proverbial coin. While thread is not locked, lets remove any personal vendetta's from any additional posts and stay on topic while in off topic. (smiles)
