Topping Of Coatings?

Really good coatings like Gyeon MOHS which last well over a year. When I wash my car everything comes right off and I do not need to scrub or clay anything because nothing sticks to my car.
I dry my car a with a $75 Toro leaf blower (200 MPH wind) and do not need to use any towels at all. This is a plus because no drying towels equals no scratches from drying.

I use Gyeon can coat maybe once a month to keep the shine and gloss very VERY nice and the paint super hydrophobic.

Wax and Sealants are old school. I used to only use Dodo Juice and other high-end waxes but no more. Wax protects by holding stuff in the wax and wax does not last nearly as long.

"It's not necessary, but a qd, wax, or
sealant can freshen and soften the feel
making you feel all fuzzy.

So go ahead and top if you like (I know
how hard it is NOT to play with your toys),

just make sure to use the same brand
or a compatible product that is syner-
gistic with your coating choice; not one
that would sacrifice the cool beading
or attract dust".

Its not that great as I have used it for years, after a while you will find better. Now I use Gyeon and Kamikaze products now.

Introducing perhaps the "holy grail" of detail sprays then... one that provides gloss AND protection!

Yea but I don't like those kind of sprays. Lol.
I much prefer something like Last Touch that does 1 thing and does it good. Real protection from a spray? As in protects my paint from bonded contaminants for a good 4-6 months? Reload can't do it for even 1 month.. D115 can't do it.. Can that 1? That's a tall order.

"Milder solvents" Mild, but it still sounds like they'll eventually rub off your real layer and leave your paint standing with the spray alone, that's why my gallon of D115 only see's customers vehicles these days.

Here's why I top my coatings: I like doing it and have too many LSP to let sit around!

I love to top my coated car with certain waxes, the reason being it's just for the look. I'm not 100% confident that a bird bomb won't etch through a sealant or a wax but I'm 100% confident I can leave a bird bomb to bake on a coated surface of my paint for three solid days before I wash it off and have the surface pristine. So to me, I coat my car for the protection it gives over wax or sealant, I treat the coating layer as that, protection from the harsh stuff. The wax is just for looks, but I picked pbl Synergy so it will also last on my car. The other nice part about topping your coating is just how relaxing it is for me.

I always topped C1 with EXO. I like the way water reacts to EXO. It seemed to help the appearance. I topped CSL with EXO for the same reason, I had read the CSL wasn't as hydrophobic as EXO. Recently I read that CSL is actually very close so I will try CSL alone next time. But after the initial application I don't do anything but clean. I may use C2v3 mixed 10:1 with water as a drying aid once every two or 3 months to amp up the gloss a little, but that would be it.

The intention of the thread is not a case against coatings. We all know the pro's and con's around coatings. Whats being questioned is the topping/maintenance side of things which nullifies the existence of coatings which came into existence for those not having time to repeat seal or wax and needed a "maintenance free" solution. It now has become a joke as its the most time consuming, maintenance requiring, counter productive, costly solution that is against the sole/core reason for its existence.

Zubair, you are correct, but; what would i do with all my free time? I'd have to get a new hobby.

I have to agree with The Guz on this one. I use a lot of McKee's products and have been very pleased with most, but I will be switching back to Optiglass to coat glass.

Since I value your guys' opinions, will you share whay you prefer the Opti to McKees?

The water starts running off the windshield starts at a lower speed. The Opti-glass lasts longer. I have not done a side by side yet which I need to do to verify my observations on different vehicles.

Why do we feel the need to top our precious wax job with a spray wax or quick detailer?

Why must we top that oh so amazing sealant with a wax, spray wax, or quick detailer?

So why not top a coating?

Thing is.....you do not have to top a coating. Here is where I actually use a "topper" on a coating:

When releasing a coating job where I was not able to let it cure overnight.
When releasing in bad weather.
When releasing when I know the customer is going to be going on a road trip.
Yearly after a decontamination wash as a bonus to them.

Toppers help to refresh the water behaviors on an aging coating as well where you know there is still protection there, but water characteristics have diminished.

Dave nailed it. For me I have the DP version of the glass coating. I noticed the hyrophobic properties last longer thus far on opti-glass. I have had my car with DP, my uncles and my dad's has opti-glass. DP lasted a long time on mine. On my uncles it lasted about 3 months before DP needed a refresh. Opti-Glass has been going strong on my dad's car for 5 months. I have started to use opti-glass clean & protect to keep both coatings lasting longer.

I really like the Clean & Protect also.

I guess it kind of goes back to topping a coating lol

4. and protect your coating.
5. and protect your coating's protection, et cetera.
6. To add lubricity to your drying step.
