Hello everyone, not too long ago I was told that Mckee's Coating Prep Polish could be used to deep clean certain hard exterior plastics such as the wheel well guards on Toyota Tacoma's...

Well I decided to give it a try today and wow it sure did work and worked pretty amazing! I don't think I've ever been able to prep this hard plastic trim anywhere near this good in previous efforts using APC or other plastic cleaners.

Check out these 50/50 shots.

Btw, the trim has fully dried at this point. The Coating Prep Polish removed all the oxidation using a terry applicator pad by hand.

I forgot who gave me this tip, but thank you! I thought I'd pass it along for anyone who has this sort of oxidized hard non porus trim in rough shape... I can't wait to clean the rest of it and see much better results and longevity once I coat it with a spray aerosol.

This is the Prep Polish I used.

Coating Prep Polish, clear coat polish, best car polish

Seriously huh? The 1st thing you usually think is to keep polish off trim, but the cleaning ability of this stuff opens up some possibilities now. That trim has never looked looked that good before dressing/coating it.

I have the previous version when it was DP Coating Prep so I assume it will be the same results.
When you are done with the Prep, what are you using for a coating on the trim?
 
thanks for the tip, i have some of this and it's good to know it can be used on other surfaces than paint...

I typically top with Sonax BSD or PNS

It's actually is the DP version that I used, thx to The Guz who hooked me up back when I needed to re apply Mckee's Coating on my paint.

On that trim I like to use Meguiars D4510 Plastic & Vinyl Coating aerosol, works great on it.

I know some of the "non-abrasive" cleaners actually have some level of cut, albeit minuscule. Is this leaving the OEM texture/finish intact (i.e. truly just cleaning) or is this abraiding the plastic ever so slightly (thereby imparting some shine)?

Here's how it looks right now.. Notice there's a couple of spots that have heavy oxidation which need a little bit more, but they're definitely on their way out.

It looks and feels like the original OEM texture/finish. At least I believe this is what it was like when new [we bought it used]

I have a bottle that I have used to try and prep paint with and on certain soft paints I get some marring which is odd since it doesn't contain abrasives. Even with a black finishing pad I got some marring on my GTO paint.

Will definitely keep it around to try out this trick! Thanks!
 
I have not used DP/Mckee's prep polish but I love knowing about polishes/chemical cleaners that are safe on textured trim. I polish nearly all neglected trim (even textured) with poli-seal/GPS and as long as I use low speeds and don't induce too much heat I am confident it won't effect the texture of the plastic. It's good to know prep polish works similarly.
 
I finished cleaning them today. I tried using my DA polisher w/3" microfiber pad, then switched to a gray LC Thinpro, but both failed to gain positive results as they just loaded up too fast.. Working by hand with terry applicators gained much better results.

This is how they looked before. I would always have to resort to covering up this oxidation with product.

Passengers side, after only using the Mckee's Prep Polish + a final wipedown w/Mckee's N-914 and allowed to dry.

It's supposed to rain later tonight, so I'll hold off on applying Megs D4510 until tomorrow.

BTW, this is the Taco body style/gen I'm looking to pick up. Good chance I will be using this tip. Nice coincident.
