Sealant comparison

Without re-reading all of this was Optimum Car Wax included in these tests. Just wondering.

Just FYI, on deck I have:

  • Sonax Spray and Seal
  • McKee's Hydro Blue
  • CarPro Hydro2
  • Sonax Brilliant Shine
  • McKee's 10 Minute Paint Sealant
  • FinishKare 215 (cleaner/sealant)

Nice curious on the 10 min paint sealant. Wish there was a way to send the megs ultimate fast finish (uff)

I can try to get some. Megs is generally more readily available. There are probably another 20 or so fairly common product I may (or may not) get to.

Just a FYI on Collinite. Had to wash the Wife's Sienna this morning after the rain went thru Friday and Saturday. I have 845,885,476 and 915 spread out on different panels except the hood which has a combination of 845,885 and 476. All the panels beaded like the day I applied 3/15/2018. In the looks department 915 has a slight (very slight) edge. We have had a run of temps 110+ for a while and the Monsoons are coming so we shall see. I did see some comments on testing some of these so I am just throwing into the mix, not to take away from your experiments

This is great. Always happy to see what results others are getting. Please keep us posed on how this goes. Based on my experience with Collinite you're going to be waiting a while to see one of these stop sheeting.

Been longer than I expected to update. I did a couple of tests but didn't get a chance to post. If you just want to see results jump to the bottom of this post.

Sentra hood two weeks ago animation. You can see that none of them are performing much better than the area with no sealant. I was ready to call these done.

Sentra hood one week ago animation. I decided to test it one more time and it's pretty clear the Aquawax/Fast Clean & Shine combo is still working. How did it get better a week later? The only difference between these two tests are that this one took place when it was warmer out, and I waited about an hour after drying the hood to test it. Shocking that this is still working and is outperforming the Reload/Ech2o combo. Duragloss Rinseless as a QD is fading and I'll call it done. This lasted surprisingly long time.

So what's going on? I have fairly soft water. You know how it's hard to get soap off your skin when using soft water? Same thing here. I found a while back that drying vs. testing when still wet gave me better results. This leads me to believe that some time to air dry after towel drying may be helpful as well. I think there are quite a few sealants I'll need to retest. Interesting that some of these seem to be more sensitive to soap than others. I'm guessing here and am open to other ideas for what's going on.

Rover hood two weeks ago animation. Rover Hood one week ago animation: Too hard to see on the white hood. Like the Sentra, this also got dried and had about an hour in the sun before testing. SFX-4 in the top left is outperforming everything by a mile. Water is flying off it almost immediately.

I tested the Rover hood again today. Washed with N-914 rinseless, dried, and let sit in the sun for a couple of hours:

Working well
SFX-4 - clearing 100% of water in ~4 seconds

Working ok
Mystery Sealant #4 - clearing 100% in ~20 secs
Four Star - clearing 100% in ~25 secs
3M synthetic - clearing 100% in ~30 seconds
McKees's Fast Wax - clearing 100% in ~35 secs

Barely working
Dodo Supreme - 80% in 1 min
BF Carnuba - 50%+ in 1 min
303 Spray - 50% in 1 min
Griots Finishing Sealant - 50% in 1 min

Very slowly or doing nothing (these are clearing < 50% in a minute)
Rupes 808
Prima Hydro
Griots Spray Wax
Nanoshock
Prima Slick
Poorboys Sealant w/carnuba
Megs20
Poorboys EXP
HD Poxy

Updated graph. I'm getting better results when drying after washing and letting them sit after drying. Some of these will get a retest. At this point I can say the results are accurate relative to each other for the test conditions. Some of these may show show longer absolute duration in a re-test. And there's summer vs. winter exposure to consider as well.

Checked both hoods again today. Most of the products on the Rover hood have slowed down. Nanoshock seems to be doing a little better that last time. I did some testing with the hose and noticed that I can get faster or slower clearing based on water pressure and how I apply it. Less water pressure and letting water collect on the hood takes more time for it to clear. I'll try to use this method consistently going forward. Based on the results today I'm Griot's Finishing Sealant done.

Mystery Sealant #4 - clearing 100% in ~40 secs

Checked the Sentra hood yesterday and today. Interesting, water is moving off the hood faster today, including the area with no sealant. I think clearing time is relatively the same. Yesterday and today. None of them are doing much more than the un-sealed area. Calling these all done and will get some new products applied soon.

So dg fcs with aquawax is doing better then just aquawax. Does this mean it's really just fcs doing all the work and fcs alone would do it as good if not better then the mix??

I had the same reaction. I suspect it's a summer vs. winter thing. When I testing Aquawax it was rained on every day, 24x7.

Is the sonax pns the spray can stuff? I was looking for some online and noticed it was in an aerosol can and for some reason that seemed odd.......complete newby by the way.

Yes it is a spray

Am I reading the chart right that it’s performed the best thus far?

Yes you are, PNS is different then other spray sealants, it has a slight grabby feel to it and it not watery like other spray sealants.

It's my daily used sealant for customers for numerous reasons.

(Warning: Rambling, thinking out loud post.)

PNS performed as well as DG 111 and DG Track Claw. It's hard to take away absolutes from these tests. I may skip 2-3 weeks between testing, so they could be close a month of longevity difference. And weather. And how I held the hose that day. And drying vs. just rinsing. I would look at these results as generalities rather than absolutes.

The top tier so far is PNS, DG 111, DG Track Claw, Collinite 845, and FK 1000. These are all close enough that I consider them about equal. All excellent in terms of longevity. I have a preference for PNS because it's easier to apply. But they're all very usable.

Sonus SFX-4 may get into this category as well. Will see how it holds up over the next 3 months. So far it's much better than anything else I'm currently testing. Interesting that I don't recall ever hearing about it previously.

You guys sparked a thought: I need to differentiate winter from summer testing in my chart. For example, I really doubt that DG Rinseless is outperforming DG Aquawax. Not impossible, but unlikely. Aquawax had rain, or snow or ice almost every day. The DG Rinseless did not. I think I need to take all of these through the winter as well to see how they do.

However, I am confident that those top products are really that good. They all did 24+ weeks in winter. In area with better
weather they could go longer.

Yes, as Cruz wrote. I suspect it reacts with air so it needs to be in a spray can. No issue - I spray it on the paint and also prime my applicator. I use a suede microfiber for this stuff. I apply it almost like a coating.

Cruz, "grabby" is a great description for PNS. It's different than anything else for sure. It may seem expensive, but you use very little per car. Given the longevity I think it's fairly priced.

And I'm with Cruz - if I had to pick one only it would be PNS. I'll still use the other products because I like them. For example:

  • Dodo Future Armour doesn't lasts as long, but goes on so easily it's just nice to use.
  • Most of the spray waxes are good drying aids, go over anything, and make your car look great quickly.
  • DG 111, Track Claw, Collinite, FK 1000... you have to use these to see what they do. All great products.
  • I think Reload+Ech2o looks amazing despite not lasting long. As a QD it's fantastic.
So there's no single right answer. If I'm ever done testing I would still keep several of these in my garage.

The synergy QD for Sonax PNS is Sonax Brilliant Shine Detailer. And that one is some potent QD for sure. It's also leaves some kind of grabby finish. Think it's cause of that it gets you some very aggressive water behavior and self cleaning ability. And Sonax recommend to use PNS as a topper on their ceramic coating cc36. Wonder if PNS and BSD has a kind of ceramic chemical build up to them. The longevity of BSD is very impresive on it's own. I have experienced that it gives you a solid 2 months longevity on the summer months. Apply it after drying and it's goes a long way. I spray the application mf towel 2 times and use that on the half of the roof and then 1 spray in the to the other roof. So 2 sprays on the bigger panels and then 1 spray a panel. I spray the mf towel and apply it through that and follow up with a plush mf towel to buff it up. It can be some finicky to spray on the car. I do that with BSD in an fine mist spray bottle they use in hair saloons called Flairosol spray bottle. It's gets much easier to apply to the panels and even as a drying aid if wanted to do that. Be sure to soak the mf towels after used in some APC and water solution or a mf detergent. Otherwise you have a mf towel that has lost it's soaking ability. Would think this is the same for PNS. If you are not ready to test out PNS yet you can get a kit deal with 3 mf towels and BSD för 5$ extra. And you can see what you get with PNS but a little shorter longevity. For some reason the looks of BSD and think the same with PNS. Looks awesome on white paints. And the aggressive water behavior is the closest you get to a ceramic coating IMO.
Sorry for a little high jack on the thread. You do an amazing thing to share your experience with different LSP. I would like to see a re-test on Polish Angel Cosmic Spritz if you are going to do some. That's a very strange result with that low longevity. It would be much more close to the top tier of the other products you have used so far.

I also use BSD in a different spray bottle to get a better spray Pattern. I've been interested in those salon bottles as well to see how they would do.
