Sealant comparison

Washed the Rover and Sentra with CarPro Reset and a Big Red Sponge. Did not get a chance to test the Boxster. Hope to get to it tomorrow night.

Mother's Speed Wax, Mystery #7, Uber, and DP Spray Sealant are done. I somehow forgot to test Prima Hydro MAX on the Rover driver door. I'll try to check it tomorrow.

Rover (video)
  • MS #6 - 7 seconds
  • Red Mist - 8 seconds
  • DP Spray Sealant - 15 seconds (calling it done)
  • Hydro Max - did not test
  • Mothers Speed Wax - 12 seconds (calling it done)
  • MS #1 - 3 seconds
  • DG 104 - 1 second
  • Collinite 845 - 1 second
Sentra (video)
  • CarPro EliXir (QD) - 6 seconds
  • Scholl Concepts Barracuda -6 seconds
  • DG 931 as a QD - 9 seconds (almost done)
  • Ultima Waterless - 3 seconds
  • Mystery #7 - 17 seconds (calling it done)
  • Uber - 18 seconds (calling it done)

Ultima Waterless is doing surprisingly well. It's at 8 weeks and still clearing in 3 seconds. Will have to see if it outperforms DG 931 mixed as a waterless wash.

Update for the Boxster and the 1 product I missed on the Rover last time. Both were washed with N-914 at 128:1 using MF towels.

Hydro Max is done. Megs Hybrid Ceramic and Hydro Blue are doing ok. Spray & Seal is doing great. Keep in mind the Boxster doesn't drive a lot of miles, is garaged, and doesn't go out in the rain. We'll see how these products do in the brutal world the Rover has to live in. For now Spray & Seal is on my short list.

How do you like using the bid red sponge with soap like reset? And you probably went over on why you use it with soap and not n914 somewhere.. but if you can quote or link, much appreciated!!

Seems to work well with Reset. Perhaps a little more foam than I like, but works well. No reason not to use the BRS with N-914, I just don't want to use my BRS on the wife's Boxster. I'm sure it's clean, but I use that BRS for on some nasty dirt and I a belief (maybe unfounded) that the MF towels I use for waterless are more gentle on paint than the BRS. I haven't done any testing so I can't know this.

It really comes down to convenience and speed. Using the BRS on the Rover and Sentra is fast for me, even with rinsing it for every panel. Those cars are outside, dirty, and often beyond what I would consider suitable for rinseless washing. The Boxster is almost never dirty, just a little dust.

@RippyD
In post 541 you mention that Ultima Waterless Wash has been on for 8 weeks, but it seems to be applied on 8/29, so actually only 3-3.5 weeks, correct?

Maybe I’m missing something or maybe you had DG 931 QD in your mind, which appeared to be at 8 weeks at that point?

Can you post your latest or your last updated excel of sealants please

Yes, thanks for the correction. Not sure how I got that wrong. As of today it's 4.3 weeks.

Done. The spreadsheet is always available via the link in my sig. (The image upload and management process here drives me crazy.)

Collinite 845 and DG 104 are both doing well, of course. They're both clearing water very quickly. With 845 I don't see the water run off - it's just gone immediately. I'm still seeing similar performance from Sonax Spray + Seal. Ultima waterless is also still working after 5 weeks.

DG 931 as a QD (6:1 ratio) is finally done after 13 weeks. This seems crazy and I'm hoping somebody else will test this as a reality check. McKee's Hydro Blue is also done.

Added 3 more long term sealants. The weather was not as warm as I expected and I added these late in the day in ~70 degree weather. Hoping they cure well before we get rain. If not, I'll remove and reapply next week. It looks like a few days of 70 degree weather are expected next week. After that I'll likely have to apply products in the garage with a heater.

These were applied to the driver side front door of the Rover. I polished it with a LC black pad and DG Squeaky Clean, followed by washing twice with CarPro Reset. Here's a video of the water sheeting. About a minute for the door to clear completely.

Duragloss 111, FK 1000, and Collinite 915 were added.

All the new long term products on the Rover are doing well. The DG products (104 and 111) are not shedding water as fast as the others. If we get some warmer temps this week I'll get a few more products added. I need to test Soxan Spray + Seal outside on the Rover. It's doing remarkably well on the garaged Boxster.

Red Mist, MS #1, and Scholl Concepts Barracuda are done. Red Mist looks like another nice Dodo product.

The DG products (104 and 111) are slowing down faster than expected. For DG 111 the temp may be been too low to cure well. DG 104 had enough heat.

Ultima Waterless is done. This did amazingly well for a waterless wash. This and DG 931 as a QD are far ahead of anything else I've tested in terms of sheeting water for a QD or Waterless wash. DG gets the vote for cost, Ultima for ease of use.

DG 104 and DG-111 are slowing down more quickly than I expected. DG 111 may not have had adequate temps to cure.

Collinite 845 - 2 seconds (one small area, most of it is clearing in 1 second)
DG 104 - 7 seconds

Collinite 915 - 2 seconds
FK 1000P - 4 seconds

Was Menzerna Power Lock+ part of the testing? Even though it's not as new as some entries it's still an excellent performer I've found.

I haven't tried Menzerna Power Lock, nor Jescar, which I assume is the same product. I can only buy so many $30+ sealants to use $0.50 worth. I've bought quite a few and traded for many. The ones I buy first are those with sample sizes.

Edit: Just noticed that Jescar sells samples. Ordered some. May not get get it applied until Spring, but we'll see how Winter goes.

Just wanted to check in. I have not abandoned this thread. I have 2 (3 - can't remember) tests that I need to post. Just have not made the time. Too dark, cold, and wet to want to be out there washing cars. Days will be longer and warmer soon and I'll have more opportunity. Apologies for the long break. Some other updates (mostly not relevant):

  • I am working from home since Covid. I have a bottle of 303 Graphene sitting on my desk as a reminder to go do some car testing. It mocks me every day.
  • Despite being home, Covid has screwed up my schedule and I have less time for car stuff and other hobbies. The wife also works a lot more, so I have to deal with more house stuff.
  • My work is also crazy. Literally taking a break from work at 8:30pm to write this.
  • Hope everybody is healthy and safe.
Looking forward to some daylight and warmer temps soon. Will try to get my updates posted this weekend.

Thanks for keeping us posted. I hear you about the COVID impact as my hobbies took a back seat for 8 months as both my wife and I were heavily involved with the vaccines currently on the market ( my wife worked 8 months 7 days a week, 12 hour days at times, no vacation time off to get the vaccine out, burned her out but for a good cause) n those coming out in a few weeks. Finally we both had some time off

Have tested the Rover a few times over the Winter and the Boxster a couple have not bothered to post since no new products were added. Collinite 915 still doing well. Everything else is done. Collinite 845 is still clearly very quickly on the top 1/2 of the door but too slow on the bottom half. This tells me it can't stand up to grime as well as 915 does. Or maybe it was just the application.

The Spray & Seal on the Boxster is still clearing almost immediately. I have to believe I had something else under it or the paint is in such good shape that it will shed water that quickly. I'll add it to the Rover to see how it does. It would be great if it worked this long. But I doubt it.

Added Stoners Bead Max, Jescar Bead-It, and 303 Graphene Nano spray to the Rover a couple of weeks ago. They had a day at 65 degrees before getting rained on, so hopefully they had time to bond.

I'll get some additional videos from m Winter testing posted this weekend and will test the new products. Hope to get a few more added this weekend as well.
