Those standard foamed wool pads work great on random orbitals!
I believe it's more widely used in Europe.
They cut like crazy because the fibers sort of twist, and "rope out", and chop at the paint harder than a single strand of wool. Think of how the 4 ply twisted wool cutting pads are more aggressive than the single fiber non-twisted pile pads are.
However, if someone is using the d/a properly, like a sander, relying on orbit and maybe some rotation the standard foamed wool may not work. We were using these things at speed 6 like a rotary on Porter Cables and they were a godsend.
My associate and I went around a huge trailer. I was still on the truck, and he moved on to the trailer. My plan was to try a foam polishing pad on a rotary with M66 or DG501. But he tried a few combinations of foam, and microfiber on M100. Come to think of it, I believe he was on speed 4 or something like that. When I got to it, I went to speed 6 and got to grinding it.
In this pic I had already done my test spots, and was compounding, then polishing/sealing with M66/yellow b&s pad. I went over the finished results with Optimum Car Wax. On the bottom shelf, on It's side is the purple foamed wool pad.
