Using d300 with foam

If you polished last year and have been maintaining the car well I'd skip D300 and go with a less aggressive Polish to get the gloss you want, reduce the Swirls and save as much clear as you can for any future paint work. D300 has some really good cut to it and I'm sure you can get the results you want with much less cut.

Meguires D300 does not break down like Menzerma SC400 so I normally will have to use a finishing polish after D300 to get the best results. I can get SC400 to finish better but you have to work it longer. They both are great compounds but finish differently. You can keep working D300 all day by spraying a little water on it, but SC400s abrasives break down to give a better finish and sometimes no finishing polish is necessary.

All paints are different. Never say never. If one compound did it all then everyone else would be out of business and we wouldn’t have to buy different products or do test spots to determine what works best. The last car I did took me 30 minutes of testing to determine the right pads and polishes to do the job right.

Sometimes it takes me longer than 30 minutes of testing.

If you refer to Todd's third graphic, the FG400 actually breaks down into primary crystal abrasives. The FG400 abrasives actually begins life as a clump of micro and diminishing abrasives mixed together. As they are spent only the non diminishing abrasives remain.

To me this makes FG400 sort of an interesting product. Aside from It's great workability, So long as the pad isn't caked up, one could probably continue cutting as long as the lubricant holds up.

With FG400 I like to slow cycle it to keep the abrasive clumps larger for longer periods of time. It's a discipline, but whenever I start it at speed 6 I feel like I'm not getting the maximum amount of cut out of it. Still cuts great, but slowing down those large clumps at like speed 4.5 on a PC, and rubbing that sharp slurry of metals into the paint just seems to promote deeper defect removal. I have this philosophy with any diminishing abrasive polish, but the uniqueness of FG400's abrasive orientation make me think of ways to try and maximize it
