How do you get the overspray off the tires?

Good luck and enjoy your project!

You apply dip release on the tires first (or tire shine)

Spray the tire too to build up a thick enough coating to peel easily.
Then just peel it off in one piece at the end of the process

You can also tape off the entire tire
This way is a bit easier though I think

You and Scott have waayy more experience doing this than I do, and I have not painted my wheels yet, but wondering if it would be easier if they were horizontal (like in the 2nd pic), and maybe on a 'lazy susan' to turn them vs. spraying them while they are standing up?

I was thinking the same thing. It would be a nice aide in doing the circular parts of the wheel.

It might have to be motorized though. I think it would be very difficult to get an even spray otherwise. It's hard to compensate for inconsistent movement when spraying.

I don't know. Maybe a potter's kick wheel might not be too bad.

Probably wouldn't be worth it unless one planned to do wheels as a business.

Spray cans work better held vertical
I rotate the wheels 90 degree every couple of coats

The one flat one was due to it having some rough spots on the wheel face that I wanted to lay it thicker on without getting runs.

With a air setup you can hold the gun many different ways but from a can this is recommended (vertical)

How's that wheel dip laying down? Looks nice and flat...and that's from rattle cans.

The wheels are cans
The car will be from gallons

In between coats of paint drying on the wheels I decided to remove the rear spoiler so I can paint under it better and paint the spoiler more thoroughly.
Eraser wheel made quick removal of the mounting tape
I will add more and wider 3m mounting tape when I reinstall it

Wheels done

Car washed and dryed

Now to let it dry for an extra 24-30 hours for all water to dry from gaps and seals

Then mask it all up a lot of tight areas to mask then spray some dip!
