O.C.Detailing (Lynchburg, VA) and Hill City Auto Detail - 2001 Chevy Monte Carlo

It was a very nice difference in cutting power between the two. Also, the HT pads didn't eat product as badly as the CCS pads do.

I believe the rounded edges of the HT pads leaves less "ghosting", as John and I have come to call it, than the CCS pads do. I've noticed that the hard edge of the CCS pads will allow dry product to accumulate if you're not careful and will mar or ghost the paint.

In theory, the HT pads are very, VERY nice, but execution was the problem. Whoever chose the adhesive for the velcro backing and whoever decided it was a good idea to NOT cover the entire back of the pad with the velcro should go back to the drawing board and fix those little engineering issues and they'd be perfect.

One thing I'm curious about though...is the "tearing apart" of the HT pads due to a more brittle foam formula, or is it because of the design of the velcro loop backing not covering the whole pad? Could be either one of those, or possibly both. I'd LOVE to be a part of the test group that actually tests the new design...if they release one. ;)

Thanks for the informative response. :props:

You raise some good questions!

I remember trying all kinds of pads with my Porter Cable and I bought the Hydro Tech pads about the same time I bought the Flex. WOW, what a change that was! For a while it was my "go to" combo. Then we started seeing some of the Hydros failing, it may have been as we were doing cars that were increasingly trashed. Anyway, we switched over almost entirely to yellow, orange, white and red CCS pads and have been very happy with the performance.

To really compare the CCS pads with the Hydros I would have to go back and use them again. Maybe in a side-by-side comparison. But that's obviously not a productive move given the life cycle of the Hydros. If there were some sort of "improvement" made to the Hydro design or cell structure, I'm sure I would give them another shot. I too believe that leaving a quarter inch of pad showing around the velcro backing has something to do with its short lived life.

And...I just noticed, I got this car mixed up with the Range Rover. We actually DID work 2 full days on this car. The reason we did it, and the reason we charged so little, was because the gentleman we did it for had helped John and I get a lot of business from the lot I detail for. He and the other salesman both pushed a lot of cars in front of the lot owner and wanted us to polish out the paint, so to repay him, we charged him $200 and gave the car the full whammy. Obviously not a showroom detail or a concourse detail, but we gave him 2 full days of honest, hard work to show our appreciation.

This is what detailing is about. A full turn around and save!

Very nice work. I understand taking care of your customer and lowering your price........just as long as he doesn't take advantage of it.

It would have been a 350.00+ job for me if it was a new customer. Just for a baseline from what others are getting.
