2006 Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT in Nero Carbonio Metallic

Maybe I'm misunderstanding this...but are you saying you sanded dry?? I thought you wet sanded

When I said lube, I meant the oils found in polishes anyhow, that's where you got confused.

oh ok gotcha...I thought that may have been what you meant but thought it may be better to just ask :).

So what are the benefits/reasons for dry/moist sanding like you did as opposed to out right wet sanding?

Just less mess pretty much, easier to control the amount of shedding. But not too terribly different.

oh ok...was just wondering casue it seems ive seen a lot of people lean totally towards wet sanding as thou it were the only option

Prior to sanding discs like the new meguiars ones, and trizact, I don't think dry sanding was much an option. With traditional papers, I have never dry sanded.

Differences of wetsanding to dry sanding would be it has little to no clearcoat dust while sanding (dust appears when it dries), longer effectivity of the sandpaper, cuts less (less abrasive) as your using water as a lubricant (i prefer water with some soap), harder to see what your sanding as water gets in the way.

For finishing, it is best to use wetsanding. For prepping and faster cutting, dry sanding would be a better option.

Makes sense to me...so what is it about the Megs and Trizact disks that makes them able to dry sand safely? Is there any paticular part of their make up that allows this?

In comparison to like products they present a much more fluid transfer, and glide across the paint much smoother. You can use them dry with great results and lack of tracers. I also haven't seen any pigtails with these discs, not sure exactly what their make up has to do with that other than they are quality sanding pads, and expensive.

I have seen much more affordable discs in many body shops, and plenty of tracers and pigtails to go with them. However you can't really blame it completely on the sanding pads as user error is the more likely culprit.

AMAZING work Brian. Truly inspiring stuff. :D Can't wait to get my hands on an exotic luxury sedan like that. ;)
