What do you do for rims that require hours of scrubbing and spraying with cleaner and brushes? Anything expensive will put you in the poor house with alot of repeated applications on really neglected rims...
Thanks for help
Chris
Hey Chris
The professional guys may have better ideas but I've used the following over the years
1) Wash to remove surface dirt (I want to try the Sonax wheel cleaner)
2) Tar spots - OTC bug and tar remover (megs) (before clay or polish)
a) I want to dissolve the tar before using clay and often helps
b) I now check my lower panels for tar before claying paint to save time! You know those little black spots that don't want to come off with clay. Dab, wait a second, wipe and gone.
3) Baked on brake dust - Clay and paint cleaner or glaze (OG, 4 star, etc) to remove grime and clean CC rims
a) if clay doesn't remove it quickly, I go right to a paint cleaner or polish to soften or remove
4) Really tough stuff - a polish, swirl remover or compound (Opt, Megs UC).
5) Finish with a rim sealant.
The dedicated rim sealant really helps with the bimmer wheels but it's not perfect. Don't know if there is a better option, but I can now clean up the rims pretty quickly instead of hours.
Since I started using the rim sealant, I normally prespray the rims and tires with a diluted (clay lube) ONR solution and brush with diluted car wash. Wheels come out bright and shiny for the most part and I don't need to reseal the rims as much. Wheels seem to stay cleaner too.
FYI: The wheel sealant I'm using seems to wash off when using a wheel cleaner.
