Management salary????

Something doesn't sound right here. At 3 cars per day, 5 days per week, 52 weeks per year, you would have to get $60.00 per car for yourself to make $46,000.00 per year. Dealers near me don't get big bucks for a full detail, maybe $130.00 for a small to mid size car. Don't think the dealer is going to give you alone 1/2 of that as a salary. Opinions may vary.

I thought he meant each detailer did 2 or 3 cars every day.

WOW LOVE ALL THE HELP yes we as in the crew move 2-3 each per day. most days its only 2 and we charge any where from $199-285 for detail work. The reason for me looking to leave was I worked for 3 years building the department and then the company was bought by a bigger company... has NOT been a bad thing. However the new GM told me if we sent out any car (over flow) I would be let go as foreman. Well the used car sales manager's good friend works at a differant dealerships detail department and thats where until now they have been sending cars. So he flat told me I am NOT sending you any cars...Thus I said I give and gave my notice. Now it looks as tho they may double my salary and give some bonuses... I had another job working with Aflac however this may work out to be a great thing in the end.. GM today told the used car manager he can not send any cars out for ANY reason!! ;) SO again thank you for ALL your input

So you wanted to leave because they were going to increase your workload?

That's not what he said. He said the General Manager told him he would be fired if any cars were sent from the dealership to another detail shop instead of being done in-house, but the Used Car Manager (who works under the GM) told him no cars from his department would be getting sent to the in-house detail shop, but rather would be sent out to his (the UCM's) buddy's detail shop.

So basically he decided to quit instead of getting fired through no fault of his own. Seems to me he should have just told the GM about the situation before trying to quit, since it appears the Used Car Manager was the one who needed his boss to lay the smack down on him like has now happened.

For double the salary, why not stay and try it, especially in this economy. What is the risk of doing so?... and what would you be losing? If you end up not liking it, then look for something else. In the meantime, you make more money and try something a little different. Maybe you will really like management. Just my 2 cents.

Just wanted to throw in my 2 cents here...Last year I was promoted at my job to supervisor of 10 people. They gave me a $10k raise to take the position.

After almost two years of dealing with the BS that comes with the job I recently stepped down. Of course this is in a corporation, so I had to deal with the office politics and a laundry list of other issues.

In the end I decided that it just wasn't worth the headaches, the extra hours worked, and the lack of respect I received. Being a supervisor I basically took it from both sides. I had my team giving me crap every day, plus upper management giving me crap.

It started effecting my health and my overall happiness at work. So, I decided that I needed to take a step back and just do my regular job and focus more on my detailing on the side, since this is my real passion.

From my personal experience supervising or managing people is a very tough job depending on the group of people you have. It can also at the same time be very rewarding. You need to look at the pros and cons and see which one out weighs the other.

I can totally relate to you there. My situation is the detail department at a dealership, but same principal. getting it from both sides all the time, all kinds of extra hours worked, but no real compensation. And it is taking a toll on my mental and physical health. I only half joke when i tell them i will have a stroke or heart attack by age 30.
