Hey guys i was working on the car and accidentally locked the keys inside.

All windows are up and doors are locked.

The car is a 2003 Mazda6. The first locksmith I called gave me a quote of $150 dollars to unlock the car which sounds rediculous since I could go to a Mazda dealership and get a new key for that much...

What should I do?

Pry the door open slightly from the top using a plastic or hard rubber wedge and stick stick a slightly bent rod through to push the unlock switch. I've done it quite a few times on my own and buddies cars.

Here is an example of it.

does your insurance have lockout on the policy? this many times is included with roadside service coverage.

and, in defense of the locksmith, your logic doesn't make sense because he's making it so you DON'T have to go to the dealership to get a new key. it is a convenience thing. you don't go to a restaurant and tell them they are ridiculous because they are charging you $25 for a filet mignon that you could make at home for $5, haha

tow company's around here will get it unlocked for 50 bucks using the wedge and rod if you dont have one.
i imagine there's something like that in your area.

I actually ended up calling a local cop and he got it open for me.

Since he pried the door open it sticks out a tiny bit now =(
Serves me right for my stupidity.

Several years ago lying in bed one evening, my wife tells me that she had an interesting day and forgot to tell me what happened. Seems like she put her purse and keys down on the seat next to our one-year old daughter, buckled her into her car seat and then proceeded to lock her in. My first reaction was why didn't she find the closest brick and smash a window. Temps were in the 50's and obviously in no immediate risk, used a passerby's phone to call the police, they too wanted to smash a window, but there happened to be a mobile locksmith in the same plaza that had her out in less than a minute.

HE'S BACK!!!!!!!! FFFFFFFLLLLAAAASSSHHHH!!!!! Welcome back buddy!

does anybody carry 2 sets of keys like me? its really 1 set but it all started a few years ago when i realized that all of my keys weighed a lot and probably wasnt good having all of that weight hanging from the ignition. so i separated them and only have the car key and alarm on one set and all my other keys on the other. and you could easily put another car key on the second set just in case. the car set is the only set that gets removed when using the car and the other set almost always stays in my pocket until i need to unlock the house door or something.

Hide-a-key.

I have one hidden under every car I have ever owned. I put them in such a horrible place to have to get to no one could find it by just looking.

And it isn't even a real key. It is one of those plastic "credit card" keys that AAA will make for you. They will open a door but not work in the ignition.

My Lincoln has that keypad on the door. It's a lifesaver. I don't know why more automakers don't use one?
