Edit: My math was wrong!

I forgot to factor in the % of water of the 70% IPA.

8oz of straight IPA + 24 oz water (25% of 32oz) = 25% dilution

8oz of 70% IPA yields 5.6oz IPA. 5.6oz to the total 32oz water = 17.5%

Mike, in your thread about mixing IPA, you said that mixing 8 ounces of 70% IPA with 24 oz of water(32 oz. total) would give a 17.5% IPA to water mixture. Well......

70% diluted 1:1 = 35%
70% diluted 2:1 = 17.5%
70% diluted 3:1 = 8.75%

If you filled up at 32 ounce bottle with 8 ounces of 70% IPA and the rest water, that would be a 3:1 mixture of 8.75% IPA, not 17.5%. Correct?

Not correct. 8 oz of 70% contains 5.6 oz of IPA. 5.6oz/32oz = 17.5%

I edited my last post. realized I didn't include the total amount - you must divide 5.6 by 32, not 26.4

:) Mark, the math was already done for you. See Mikes link! :poke:

I'm still waiting for a third chemist to give me his feedback before I finalize the copy and open the thread to discussion.

As for the math, I was fortunate to have another forum member generate the figures for me, she's an engineer by profession and I trust that she's done her homework.

:D

I just mixed up a fresh bottle of IPA diluted to 10%. :)

Great article and info. This detailing stuff seems to be getting a bit complicated for this newbie. Just so much this old brain can absorb.

can someone please tell me what on earth IPA stands for? and whats it purpose?

isopropanol or isopropyl alcohol. Detailers use it as a solvent to remove oils and contaminates after polishing. See link in post #8

Ain't acronyms just grand!

IPA, the way it's used here means; Isopropyl Alcohol. Many times you'll see this term mentioned as an IPA wipe or wipe down.

Many of the compound and polishing products contain oils and other ingredients and once used should be removed to inspect the improvement or progress of a correction task. A solution of Isopropyl Alcohol and water, generally 50 / 50 is just the ticket.

The time where you are 15 minutes different than my time

i'll have a go at it..

volume of resulting solution * target dilution / strength of solute = volume of solute before filling in the solvent up to the target volume of resulting solution.

to make 1000ml solution with 10% IPA using 70% alcohol:

1000ml * 10% / 70% = 142.85ml of 70% alcohol

so i'll first pour in 140ml or so of 70% alcohol then fill it with water up to 1000ml.

using ounces..

make 32 ounces of 10% IPA using 70% alcohol:

32oz * 0.10 / 0.70 = 4.57oz of 70% alcohol

first pour in 4.6 oz of 70% alcohol then fill with water up to 32 oz to get 32 ounces of 10% IPA

i hope it's correct and helpful using other products to dilute. just have a graded/graduated container ready.
:hungry:
